Found out the 4th that the pain in my leg is caused by a blood clot 15 to 24 inches long. Pain started in left calf on the 31st and went behind my knee the 2nd. Do not know of any family history having clots but I did have the flu with a 102 temp for a week prior, ended up sleeping upright in recliner for coughing 2 days before pain started. Now I'm injecting Lovenox and taking Warfarin and waiting for the pain to go away. Diving is great but right now I wonder when I can go back to work?

Hi MarkerBuoy,

Sorry to hear that.

The short answer to the question posed is, "When the doctor releases the patient for work activity."

Given an actual "clot 15 to 24 inches long," warfarin and enoxaparin may or may not dissolve the obstruction. Has there been any discussion of tying off and/or removing the offending vein?

Been there, done that. Sounds like a big one, but then my doc didn't really say how large mine was. The Ultra Sound tech just said "Yep, looks like you'll be staying here for a while," but my doc let me treat it out patient. Did get some nasty bruises and so bored with recliner rest, but do it - follow orders. Don't want to risk complications; I guess you know they can be deadly.

My Doc is treating me as an out patient. Was also told the pain is going to dictate when I can go back to work and that I have to go in for blood work every 2 days to get Warfarin levels worked out. Did ask about removal but was told it could cause worse problems so I guess it's dissolve time.

It took a while to work out my Warfarin levels, somewhat higher than normal but not a level one would want to rush into - and I had to avoid some choices in eating. The pain lingered for some time but getting older ain't for the timid - yet still beats the alternative. Hang in there.

My prayer is that my clot will dissolve and stay gone. The problem I hear is once you get one, you're more likely to get another. Now I'm wearing a compression sock for the swelling. Pain is mostly gone but having a hard time keeping pt inr between 2 and 3. Taking 7 mg a day now to bring levels up from 1.5. Don't want to have to take thinners for the rest of my life but think of what a doctor told a coworker that's had DVT for 26 years. "You don't have to like it, you just have to live with it."

MMmm aspirin - breakfast of champions. ;)
