I took a nice run from Winthrop up to Plum Cove Glouchester today with my dive buddy and girl. We did one dive. Great water temp around 57. Visability was eh. First time skunked at Plum. There was nothing but a big 15 pounder.
At the end of the dive my bud gets in the boat first and I am floating by the ladder on the transom. These people in Kayaks were going by and I thought I heard one yell "hey there is a big fish with a fin headed your way. I said to Ron on the boat "WTF did he just say. He said there is a big fish with a fin headed your way. I got on the boat full gear real quick like a harbor seal beaching himself. I know they say sharks dont bite and all but I have not seen one diving yet and I was spooked ...lol I got on the boat and looked around. I did see a black fin sticking out of the water about fifty yards away but It was rolled over like a dolphin. It may have been a basking shark I am no expert.....Wimp.

It was probably an Ocean Sunfish. They feed on jellies. They move slowly and their fin is rolled over. They can be very large. I have seen them fishing and I have pics, but never diving. I suppose the fin thing is enough to freeak anyone out.

Have to agree on ocean sunfish. I've seen them on top a number of times here in NEw England and a quick glance might lead one to believe it was a shark. I've seen just one underwater and that was years ago in the Bahamas. Thing was as big as a Volkswagen!

I saw one from the flying bridge during a shark tournament off the Vineyard. It was about 15 feet across. I thought it was going to hit us, but it passed about a foot behind the stern. It looked like you could walk across it if it weren't plodding along. An amazing site - I'd love to see one while diving.

I wouldnt mind seeing one while diving either. I just dont like when my back is to something that someone says is swimming towards you with a fin..lol It just struck me wrong. Probably different if I expectecd it....I have to admit I was spooked....Artie

I think I would have been just as spooked!

Around here, I think a basking shark or sunfish would have been my first thoughts. If it looked like a large shark, I think most folks wouldn't say "a big fish with a fin", they'd say "a big @&*%# shark!"

The sea sunfish, also known as the Mola-mola . . .
Geeeez I'd love to see one of those in person, along with a whale shark.
My curiosity would have made me have to investigate it . . . from the deck of the boat, of course.
