BEWARE!!!! We had a carry on bag stolen after the Olympus Rep took responsibility for it and before the taxi company delivered it to our hotel. This bag was a carry on because it had all of my husbands expensive dive equipment in it. After filing police reports, paying legal fees and 6 weeks of going back and forth with Olympus tours this is the response that we got.

"We appreciate your time and patient in this matter, this has been a difficult situation as Cozumel is a taxi union monopoly that does not allow any company to manage their own transfer units and all local tours operators have to use them without any other option. We did our best to follow up with the Police, taxi union representative and airline but there were no good results, the police has no idea where was the problem because the airline said that your piece of luggage was not registered as it was a carry on and the taxi Union says that they can not take the responsibility of something that was not documented and they have doubts of this existing luggage. Unfortunately the taxi union of Cozumel does not allow us to be involved in their procedures and the result of their lack of control is to have situations like the one going on."

In other words the taxi company is calling us liars and refuses to take any responsibility for the loss. My suggestion is do not use the airport taxi service. Maybe if enough people stop using them and they lose business they will treat their customers with more respect. You can walk a couple of blocks off the airport property and catch a private cab that will take you directly to the airport. Rent a car and you will not have to deal with them at all. If you have no choice print up a form stating how many bags that you give to the rep and/or the airport taxi driver and make them sign it so that you have proof of how many bags you gave them.

We lost almost 4 days of our vacation, $3000 USD of equipment and personal items, spent $300 in legal fees and car rentals to get the required paperwork done and Olympus offered us $400 USD and the taxi company called us liars

OMG that is horrible. What is the deal with Mexico these days? I've heard people are now getting robbed over on Baja side as well. It just makes you wanna spit

I never let my bags out of sight in Coz. Everyone there acts like you should just walk away and not worry about it. If I use the airport shuttle, I bring the bags to the van and I don't get in the van until I've seen my bags loaded. At stops I watch to be sure my bags don't get off without me. Under no circumstances do me and my bags go to the hotel in different vans. At the hotel lobby, I keep an eye on my bags while I'm checking in, and I take them to my room myself. It may all seem like unnecessary effort to some but I'd rather endure a lifetime of such efforts than the pain of just one incident like you experienced.

That is a real shame. Hopefully you had travel insurance that will help reduce the cost of the loss.

If I have a carry on my carry on is with me the entire way. Now this just reinforces that rule for me.

I was thinking of a trip to Cozumel later this year, but I must say that I am considering it a No Go. Not just because of your loss, which is bad in its own right, but I have been hearing of to many bad experiences and just don't want to take the risk.

I hear about "lost luggage" far more often for places like Roatan or Bonaire than for places like Cozumel. And when you consider Cozumel sees 10x the number of tourists, it is really not a high risk destination. But you should always keep an eye on your bags anywhere you go.

So, this is the 4th board I've read this on today... and surprise, it's your first post on all of them!

It's unfortunate, but for anyone who's never been to Cozumel, it shouldn't deter them. This is not representative of the island. I've had several trips over several years without anything stolen. And we travel with a few sets of photo and video equipment, stay in places that don't have safes... If you don't already have your equipment insured then hopefully you will before your next trip. Things happen. If you're traveling with thousands of dollars of dive and photo equipment, a couple hundred more a year to insure it all is sort of a no-brainer.

No matter where I go, my carry-on with the expensive stuff in it stays with me. On my lap in the van if that's what I need to do. I don't give it to a tour rep and it doesn't get tossed in the back of the van with all the luggage.

Again, sorry this happened to you.

My camera bag & carry on stay with me too, even though they try to take them from me. My passport is in the camera bag so it MUST be with me.

VintageScuba, I would reconsider your reconsideration. Have been to Coz several times, and have lost nothing, nor met or heard of anybody who had. What scubawife and the others are saying is what we practice as well....my stuff stays with me and under my watchful eye period. But this is a wise practice anywhere, even in the good old USA. If you miss Cozumel because of this, it would be a shame.
PS>....insurance is always wise as well....

just my two bits....
