Bouches-du-Rhône: missing caver diver found dead
A diver missing since Monday evening while he was caving in the Bestouan chasm, in the town of Cassis (Bouches-du-Rhône) was found dead Monday night to Tuesday, reports La Provence .

A 40-year-old Polish national, the man's body was found around 1 a.m., more than 300 meters from the entrance to the chasm.

Since Monday at 5 p.m., a group of divers exploring this underwater cave had reported a missing diver in a group of four. The search was immediately launched by half a dozen specialized divers from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of Bouches-du-Rhône.

The exact circumstances of the death of the caving diver remain unknown even if drowning seems to be a favored track by the gendarmes in charge of the investigation. An autopsy, ordered by the Marseille prosecutor's office, must be performed on Tuesday.

Sad news reaches us from the south of France, where yesterday, January 6 in the afternoon there was a fatal accident during cave diving in Bestouan.

A group of 4 Poles in the afternoon around 13 o'clock started diving in Cassis in France. Bestouan is a coastal cave, the entrance is at the bottom of the sea, and diving begins at the city beach in Casiss. You need to swim about 150m from the shore to the cave opening. The cave is known for the fact that there are many old exploration rails, which are also dark and therefore invisible.

It was a closed-circuit diving (CCR) with scooters (DPV)

There was an accident during the dive. The 40-year-old man remained in the cave. At around 5pm the services were notified. About 30 firefighters arrived and support from the French Cave Rescue Group (SSF). The man dived on the CCR Liberty (closed circuit). A day earlier, a Pole dived 118m in the French cave Goul du Pont located in the town of Bourg-Saint-Andéol in the department of Ardeche.

The body was found around 300-400m (depending on the source of information) from the entrance of the cave around 1am (after six hours of searching). The corpse was extracted from the cave. The exact circumstances of the cave diver's death are unknown. According to information from the French prosecutor's office, an autopsy will be carried out today in Marseille.

We extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of the deceased.

Update - information about Bestouan cave
Profile of the cave with a marked 400m distance from the entrance to the cave. 400m is exactly the point where the shaft begins.

The shaft begins at a depth of about 16m. The water temperature in the cave is 16ºC. There is often electricity at the entrance to the cave. For the first meters, seawater mixes with the fresh water flowing out of the cave, creating a halocline.
