Having deco the first time didn't feel much different to me. I was aware of it, and it was kinda "cool", but not wild. I don't get bored unless the deco is really long. I always find something to occupy my mind.

No need for a computer. A bottom timer has been sufficient for all the diving I've ever done.

The mark of a real diver.... Bottom timers...:rofl3: I did however buy my wife a computer....

Jim...

I thought real divers just counted one alligator two alligator until the dive was over....

Seriously, just hum the Final Jeopardy Tune --it's approximately 30 seconds . . . really!

i couldn't imagine doing that for 2hours...I'd rather pull my fingernails off with safety wire pliers.

Unless I have identified a specific task (OK, a piece of Brass to steal), I like to meander on wrecks following what interests me. That can be a pretty wide depth range and argues in favor of a decompression computer and possibly a backup.

No doubt you want to have a good idea what your worst case decompression obligation will be if everything goes wonky, but there is no reason to pay that penalty on every dive. I would be more inclined to buy a computer with a bottom timer mode so you can choose what is appropriate for your dive plan. You don’t need to plan for 200'+ Trimix dives quite yet.

I just can't get past not having the math in my head... I'll be hitting this depth for this time limit and if I pass this time I'll have a deco stop I need to do for about this time frame.... Tables are really easy after doing it for years... What scares the hell out of me is it'll be like knowing phone numbers... At one point in time I had maybe 50 peoples numbers in my head... I think I know maybe 4 now... ( Dam auto dial )....

I always smile when you see old timers who refuse to embrace new technology. Why buy an inexpensive new fangled multi function dive computer when for the same price you can get the best of clunky 1970s technology! If you are going to be a Luddite, do it with pride!

But we have to figure out how to work the damn thing... I can barely work the radio in my car...

A computer doesn't provide me with any benefit. I've done dives alongside guys with computers and what it puts out is the same thing we would do based on the tables (which you need anyways) and a 100 dollar bottom timer.

While you're spending a grand on the latest computer, I'll be spending a grand on actual diving.

to each their own :)

You could just take a ride out to the Oriskany, take a redundant air source and spend a few dives on the superstructure or going up and down the stairwells and vents. That we you'll see if you enjoy it. Just don't put yourself in a position where you need to go down to exit if you're intending to stay out of deco. It's a nice clean wreck but run a line if there's any doubt.
