I started on rebreathers very early in my diving experiences, by doing CCR Air Dil no deco. (30 m). I have subsequently heard some people derogatorily refer to that cert. as a pity pass. However the tdi pre-requisites for it are:
  • Minimum age 18
  • Provide proof of 20 logged open water dives
  • Provide proof as a TDI Nitrox Diver or equivalent from agencies recognized by TDI
Even well cared for rebreathers can be tempramental beasts. For example I spent 4 hours, last Saturday, building/rebuilding and testing/analyzing gear, prior to a single One and half hour, 35 meter, boat dive on Sunday morning. So I would encourage you to only contemplate that pathway, if you are prepared to put the hours in. Practice wise I dive about 160 hours a year and almost every weekend.

One thing that helped me get into a rebreather early was doing GUE Fundamentals, I didn't pass but what I learn't and put into practice over the next 6 months helped me immensely. I think its good that GUE are opening up more pathways.
