Best way to remove a tank boot?

I have removed the boots from my aluminum tanks that just take up space in the garage....should they stored on bare concrete, wood, plastic, lionfish skin rug?
Ideas for long time storage of unbooted aluminum?
 
Lay the tank on its side. Get a two by four about 4-12 inches long.
Rubber mallet, or other hammer needed.
Place wood along the tank, whack wood.
Move in a circle.
Boot pops off.
Rinse, dry, reattach boot.

Wow, that sounds complicated; I just knock the boot off with a 2' long piece of 2x4... usually takes two of three whacks.
