...That there are fun people all over, and no matter where my travels take me, I know I will be able to hook up with some board members and dive with them! Have I taken advantage of that yet? Noooooo. But it's nice to know I can if the wind blows that way :D

1. Pretty much doesnt matter what your agency is, its the instructor that counts.
2. DIR is worth reading and listening too even if you dont follow the whole system - they do nicely compress lots of info into one forum.
3. Check your local forums for divers in your area.
4. If you are a true newbie to diving, some skills are harder to accomplish when you arent used to the water, take your mask and snorkel to a nearby pool and try to work on them outside class.
5. Ear clearing is tough for some (me included), search out Pipedope's posts on it with the link or check out DAN's website (www.diversalertnetwork.org) for find more info.
6. We are your friends, here to inform, learn from, advise each other, and generally for the fun of diving.

well im new here too and would like to say hi ...one thing ive learned (not from here) is not to provoke moray eels ~ i almost got my fot chomped off by one of them in cayman at sting ray city..thats my advice~

Well since I drifted this way from rec.scuba, I've learned that it is possible to discuss scuba related topics with out them all eventually leading to politiclally based discussions on guns.

I learned that it was OK to never have liked the "jacket style" BC that I bought after being quite happy with the old backback and horse collar I learned with.

Now I get to go back to that much more comfortable style of equipment with a new backplate and wing! :crafty:

Buddy awareness and staying together during ascents and descents. It was taught during my OW but not emphasised for ascents and descents. Since reading it on scubaboard and understanding why it is important, I have actually put it into practice.

H2Andy:
I thought I'd start a post where people can list the best
things they've learned on here, sort of give our new members
an outline of hot topics they can then follow up on.

1. I was hunting for a new face plate for my Atomic B1 second stage and purchased one within one day after joining this site. I was amazed.
2. I learned that the resort which I will be staying at on Roatan is the best on the island for folks who just watnto dive and don't care about the night life. And got good info on the diving there.
3. I've learned that I can find out virtually anything there is to know about diving on this site. Many thanks to whoever thought this up. Unreal.

1. Spring straps are the bomb.
2. Some of this DIR junk isn't half bad.
3. The medical and underwater photography forums are a seriously useful asset.
4. Even on a message board as big as this I can't hardly find any freaking biologists!

Judicious use of the "Search" function :D
ScubaBoard Tips

Best advice: If the neckseal of my dry suit was too tight, I should cut it regardless of what the dive shop said about it stretching "eventually." Thanks, UP.

That very often when you think you are diving with a buddy - at best you are diving 'same ocean, same day' - at worst, solo.

That if I ever wanted to 'Do It Right' I'd probably have to replace all the equipment I already own - with the exception of my Apeks regs.

That I'm probably too old to learn full tech diving (I don't think I could carry all the stuff you need out of the water) (This last one may be wrong - I've never tried - but I seriously doubt that I could carry doubles + stage/deco bottles up the 250 or so steps that you often seem to need to negotiate at many sites!!)
