Hello. I am going to be visiting family in Sadieville (about half way between Lexington and Cincinnati) for about a week starting the 11th of June. We may be able to take the car for one day to go diving so I am wondering if anyone local could clue me in to the best one day, driving distance dive from there? I guess we would need to know where to rent tanks as well (since we won't have ours). I have heard of one shop in Lexington and their web site says Falling Rock is only an hour and a quarter from there. But is Falling Rock the place that is closed on week days? Any other possibilities?

And finally, what do people do for exposure protection there? Both our drysuits are in the shop and probably still will be, so I am thinking about bringing my 7mm two-piece, and/or the 3mm shorty. I just did some dives in 72 degree water in the 3mm and had no problem, if that's any help.

Well, thanks for any help. I'm sure looking forward to seeing Ky again.

Falling Rock is closed on the weekdays with few exceptions. Laurel Lake and Wood Creek are down I-75. Wood Creek Lake is actually closer. You can see them on any map just follow I-75 about an hour south of Lexington. Laurel has much better shore diving at Craiggs Creek. In fact there is a dive platform off the shore at the campground at Craiggs Creek.

The problem you might want to think about is the pollution that Laurel Lake has. While there is not a swimming advisory right now, it happens more than it should. There is a fish eating advisory though and that is scary enough for me!

All Kentucky lakes are under a fish eating advisory that the state doesn't exactly 'advertise', but the information can be found at kentucky govt. websites.

Herrington has some good diving from a boat similar to Wood Creek Lake but Herrington and super-pollution go hand 'n' hand. Herrington is only about 25 minutes south of Lexington down Highway 27.

A few of us will be at Falling Rock Park on June 11 and possibly the 12th, that might be your best bet.

Good Luck

You will find divers at Falling Rock the 11th-12th, I usually dive Sundays there.
I have been diving a 3mm shorty and a 3mm full with 7mm hood and 5mm gloves.
Granted I'm not going to stay at 40ft and 53 degrees for long.
Paradise divers is the closest shop and they are open Sat and Sun.
Check the following links, hope to see you out there!
