Belly Ache on St. Vincent?

I asked Dive St. Vincent how they were doing in the volcano and got back this reply

"...the water is causing a belly ache even when you cook with it"

My question is what is causing the "belly ache?" Is it most likely a bacterium, virus, other parasite, some chemical in the water? Any ideas on what is causing this? If so, what filter, tablet, etc. should we take with us if we are going scuba diving there in the future?

I can't speak directly to what's happening there, but after boiling you could drink it through a Life Straw for enhanced filtration. Setting that aside you could bring a small RODI assuming you have tap pressure. That would ensure the purest water.

If volcanic related, it might be sulfur or sulfates rather than bacterial contamination. Just a wild guess.

I'm no expert, but I don't know that a filter, even one as well-regarded as the LifeStraw, would remove some of the contaminants that can leach into water from a volcanic eruption:

It might be worth asking if the water has been tested.
