Ft DeSoto, or just across the channel at Egmont Key. Or just north of there at Clearwater or Caladesi. Beautiful beaches, but no real shore diving. (Maybe at Egmont for about 30 minutes, but then you'd get bored because there's not much to see. But it's a great island to explore!)

I admit I've never dove in the area, but I hear there are some good wrecks, such as army tanks. And the water temp is currently around 75F, so you'd probably need a 7m suit. Visibility is around 40-50ft - not so great.

LOL, or a 1/2mm! Just goes to show how varied comfort levels can range.

Yeah, I'm a wimp. I had never dove with a suit until last Christmas. The Western Carribean was a chilly 81F so I was forced to buy a 3m shorty.

The beaches of Sanibel & Captiva are great for shelling, if you are into that sort of thing. I have brought home shoe boxes full of very nice shells of all kinds. Because of all the shells though the beaches tend to be a bit rough, but the islands are absolutely gorgeous.
