I've had some not so good luck renting BCs since I'm about 6'5", and 185lbs. I end up in a medium (or large), and basically end up at the tightest "waist" setting sitting right about at the bottom of my ribcage. I'll be, at least mostly, traveling for warm water diving.
It seems like if I want to go BPW, and aluminum plate, that's Halcyon or nothing in a long. If I'm OK with steel, I could potentially go Scubaforce black devil long. Are there any other good options I haven't found? I'm not against a vest (ideally back inflate), but it seems like all the options I've found end up more expensive because they go custom to mix and match sized parts.
I'm tall and heavy (6'2" and 300+) but I've got the ScubaForce backplate and absolutely love it. The waist location on the lower slots is perfect and so much more comfortable than anything else I've used. I'll deal with the extra weight when I get around to travelling. I use it with a Hollis ST35 wing and a Hollis Elite 2 Harness. I've also lost 50+ pounds since I got it and it's been easy to adjust down.

Looks like I’m right on the border of a regular and tall plate. The less stuff on the harness the better, since I have to cinch under waist down so much. Even having the halcyon pockets there made it worse. Alternately i need to gain some weight.

Oh and a halcyon short seemed good for my 5’2” wife, so that was a plus!

If you're only doing single tank cutting your own can make a lot of sense. The bends in "standard" on lates are to facilitate doubles... A flat plate will keep a single closer to your back.

I'm 6'4" and have never used a tall/long plate. I currently have the older DiveRite light weight one and a Hollis v2.0 and both fit me fine.

Also, consider getting a pad for your backplate. It literally pads the part by your back and will add some girth. I have the dive rite on my DR plate and it seems to be neutral once it gets water logged.

Or you could glue pockets onto your suit, or get a "tactical" thigh-strap pouches from amazon (they should last a couple of years), or get stuff onto the shoulder straps with boltsnaps and pieces of bicycle inner tube.

Yeah i could also find weight pockets that are more vertical and take up less waist belt. I’ll try things out.

People seem to like DUI weight harnesses. I only dive on vacation so my weight is steel plate and 2 trim pockets, so I thankfully don't have to fit both weight pockets and a gear pouch on my waist belt... that is no longer 32" but still, space there is limited.

So, I just custom ordered a long BP from Crush Depth Diving. Weighs only 15.2 oz.
