According to Aquatec's site, that BC features:
  • 1000 Denier Cordura for the utmost in durability
  • One cell bladderless design elimiates trapped air cells within the BCD
  • Equipped with a comfortable adjustable cummerbund and easy to adjust shoulder straps
  • 4 Stainless Steel D-Rings allow you to mount many dive accessory where you need it
  • Expandable Zippered pockets allow you to carry medium sized dive accessories
  • 2 Over Pressure / Dump Valves (Right rear waist level and Inflator Hose Pull Dump)
  • Easy to use Weight Integrated Design eliminates the need for a separate weight belt
  • Internal shoulder webbing attached to hard back plate prevents "BCD Sag" when a tank is attached

Taking these points one at a time, these are my impressions:
Cordura is in fact a durable material, so it should last you for a while.

The one cell bladderless design is probably a good thing, but the way the cell wraps around the sides will make you slightly less stable than with a back inflate. Still, it's a minor thing, and the jacket style will help you float upright at the surface.

The cummerbund is a matter of preference, and the adjustability is only a selling point if you plan to use different exposure protection or gain/lose a lot of weight. Otherwise, if it fits you, you shouldn't have to make many adjustments.

Stainless steel D rings are good, but only if they're where you want them. I doubt it's possible to relocate them if you want to, and it's hard to see how they're secured. Bottom line, I'd rather have 3 D-rings where I need them than 10 where I don't.

Zippered pockets can be a mixed blessing, as things zipped into them are quite secure, but it can be difficult to open them in a hurry sometimes... especially with gloves on.

Basicly, it looks like it's on the good side of pretty generic, but it's hard to say without trying one on. It should be adequate if all you're interested in doing is open water in favorable conditions.

As for the scubalert power inflator, the horn is a nice safety feature, but I'm wary of the combination inflator/backup regulator. It seems like breathing out of the same device you're using to dump air on ascent while sharing with an out of air buddy might be a lot of task loading for a new diver.

It's probably fine for most recreational dives, but that BC sounds a whole lot like the one I dove for a couple of years and shelved in favor of a better one.

It's cool. I know a couple of guys from your area who drive out to Kingston pretty regularly to dive. Check out www.ontariodiving.com for a group of people relatively local that are very dedicated to diving and know their stuff.. if you can make it out to Kingston to get onto some of the boats headed out of there (check out www.northerntechdiver.com .. these guys are great) you'll get some good diving and a lot of good info and gear recommendations. You'd be able to try out a bp/wing, too.

I know I'm opening up the can of worms, but here goes... Cressi Sub BC's. Comments experiences?

I used a Cressi for a couple of yrs (aquapro 4 if not mistaken), and never let me down, the D-rings were poorly placed, but I manage to get around. those BCs never ever had any problems with them ( my daughter has one and my ex girlfriend have one, both aquapro 5 ).

My old Cressi is waiting for my current girlfriend to finish her OW so she can use it for a while and save on the initial investment.

Since I switched to BP/W setup, I'm happier than a dog with 2 tails, I'm never going back to jacket style.

I can recomend OMS, Dive Rite (my brother has a Transpack II).

If you have not even certified, or been in a pool with gear, then I'd recommend doing that BEFORE just jumping in an making a purchase.

As to what BC's people like, well... seriously this topic comes up at least three times a week, and always draws responses.

I suggest you first DIVE, then decide on if you like Jacket/Back/BP-Wings

Then research a few models, and post with specific questions about what you are interested in.

Posting, "What BC do you recommend?" is like posting "What vehicle should I buy?".

The question is too broad, and if YOU don't know what you are interested in, the internet is NO place to figure it out when it comes to what you want to dive in a BC.

A BC choice is based on diving requirements/goals, personal fit, avaliablilty, cost, personal preference.

logen:
hello

I am interested in buying a bc and was wondering if someone would be able to suggest a good bc. I was looking at zeagle, and at the genesis bc's. would you be able to tell me if these are good companys and mabye suggest a good bc

thanks

Everything I've actually rented,so far, has really sucked! (not that the brand was bad or anything, it was just beat up!)

I want to buy because I'm tired of renting something that MAY be ready for the junk pile or one dive OVER the suggested service limit!

I want to try, BUT..no one seems to rent anything good?!?!

I'm pretty set on what reg/octo/gauge I want, (I've tried nothing that I've hated yet) but the hard part is the BC...

I laugh when everyone says "rent til you find out what you like."

All of the rentals I've seen are the cheapest gear purchasable. How is wearing the cheapest jacket BC in existance from 4 different manufacturers going to help you decide which expensive BC to get?

A lot of divers in your area are switching over to bp/wing setups, like the ones Halcyon, Dive Rite, and Oxycheq make and sell.

Check those out. They're great.

why would you want to be like everyone else? anyway logan i would definately check out the Zeagle Brigade from Scubatoys.com. you cant go wrong with this bc it will handle anything you are willing to throw at it and its perfect for travel. i am relocating to koh tao, thailand and i think i may be the only one in thailand with a Zeagle Brigade. its pretty cool actually. i never met anyone that disliked their zeagle bc. my LDS instructor has been diving his ranger for over 15 years. it still looks brand new. and performs great. you will however get a few negative posts here about them. go to zeagle.com. find your local zeagle shop and go try them on. i know youll love em. good luck!!!

NWGratefulDiver:
Um ... I know. I own five backplates (by four different companies) and six wings (by four different companies) ... none of it is Halcyon.

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Holy cow. Six?!

Hey Bob, you should send me one of those doubles wings you're not using. ;)
