I have a halcyon wing and Backplate and would not trade it for anything. 'I started with a jacket style BC and thought it was Ok. but after trying the backplate and experienceing the comfort and lack of constriction around my chest area and it helps with your weight as it is less bouyant then jacket styles.,there was no going back. It does not throw you forward or face down at the surface....try the different styles out before you buy...
I am not sure where you are ,but around here you can rent them at northern tech diver in kingston.

good luck
Anne:)

Look at the Oceanic Isla. My wife and several of our friends use it and love it.

I too am a newbie - OW certified on June 15th, now have 25 dives logged. I purchased ALL my equipment when I started the classes - did lots of research and bought a whole Dacor system. I have a Dacor Elite BC with Eagle Reg & Octo.
I LOVE my BC, it fits perfect I don't experience any squeeze around the ribs (unless I tighten my velco strap a bit too tight) It's easy to work with and comes off easy when you need it to! I loved my BC so much that my husband (diving for 20+ years) bought a Dacor Talon.

I bought a new Zeagle Scout of the rack at my LDS for less than $250 and I like it.
Simple and functional,,,, like me.:D
