OK gang... give me some input.

What should (if anything) warrant a temp ban (5 day suspension)?

What should (if anything) warrant a perm ban?

You missed one.... if your DIR stop harrassing the non-DIR divers.

I for one took action awhile ago to make sure that I wouldn't violate the third rule. However they instead follow me around to shove DIR in my face. Case in point is MHK coming by to say how great his tank labeling is.

I do not know what MHK is putting on his tanks lately.

I know once upon a time he was against any labelling, at least what he called "banners."

He seemed to think it was self-evident that "banners" were bad, even though NAUI, IANTD, and TDI all pretty much require warning labels such as "custom mix" or "nitrox" or "argon."

I would think an issue like this could be discussed on its merits. But pretty soon a flame war erupts, then a bunch of moderators (double-speak for censors) swoops in.

Go ahead, pull the thread, fine with me.

It is when the banning (temp and perm) starts that the issue tends to get unfair. I guess Pete will not change his mods' powers to ban. Oh well. End of suggestion.

Only two people have the ability to completely delete threads.

All mods have the ability to split or move threads and to delete certain posts from user view. They also have the ability to edit those posts for content or spelling.

When posts are pulled, the mod will almost always inform the Mod Squad of the whats and the whys. Exceptions are most notably for spam or multiple posts and the like. The pulled posts are then put in the mod section or the archives for deliberation by us all. At our discretion, we will then PM the originator of the post if we intend to keep it out of public view.

Unfortunately, with a board this size, there are often more posts than mods to look at them. This invaribly causes anguish as some think that we are giving special consideration to a few who have slipped under the radar.

There is one way we might be able to accomodate those that wish to know why someone was banned. They put up for a retainer and defense fund for a great attorney to handly the inevietable law suits. Naw, forget it... it would still be un-ethical, and I am just not going there. :eyebrow:

Tech Admin:
Every forum out there has a different user community so as much as we want to compare different sites to each other it isn't generally a good comparision. I could show you forums where bans are given out like candy on halloween and no one publically questions a thing... I could show you forums where moderating doesn't exist unless the users do it themselves. Clearly some systems work better than others and at ScubaBoard we tend to fall on the easier side of things with less bans, less thread pulls and less moderating if you can believe that.

Yes, you are correct, but there are certain things that are just plain human nature and you will find many commonalities that apply to the public in general. While not all rules from one forum would necessarily be applicable to other forums, there are some common sense rules would generally be universal.

Infamy is far easier to achieve than fame! :D

And one is preferred over the other....I'll let folks decide which one they prefer...

I can't believe I just read this entire thread (and it's brother)...I see a simple link as a perfect solution to all the issues which are being raised...A Solution

Read, research, register, enjoy.

I'll be here though, and I'm nearly 100% positive I won't be banned/suspended/warned etc...because...well...to be honest and a bit less than humble...I have a pretty good idea where the line is and I make sure I don't spend all of my time posting here 1.) trying to find the line 2.) trying to push the line 3.) trying to jump over the line 4.) denying that there is a line 5.) whining that someone else drew the line

Yea, all is well and funny but I still say that at least a couple of these folks got booted for reasons personal to various moderators.

Let's take Cobaltbabe for example? She's been a real troublemaker, huh? We'd all love to know who booted her and who the complaint that was the basis of it came from.

But, yea, I know, its a privacy issue, right? Who's privacy?

Where should this be posted? [sic]

I'm not suggesting a "Suspended User's" forum or anything.

If this was already suggested among the thousands of posts in this thread (well, it'll be 1000s soon!), forgive the waste of bandwidth.

Having the "NA" is useful, but wouldn't it be nearly as easy to put a note into the banned user's profile explaining the ban (much or little detail -- who knows) and, at least, giving the return ("unban"?) date if not permanent?
