OK gang... give me some input.

What should (if anything) warrant a temp ban (5 day suspension)?

What should (if anything) warrant a perm ban?

OK Jeff, let's do.

So are you telling me that Natasha is NOT the one that complained about wreckwench's trip postings and got her booted?

I'm well aware that Natasha has permission to make her posts, I also know that she has paid to do so. I always thought it was a bit low to charge her for it though. Putting up with the BS that a moderator puts up with should have some small benefit.

On the other side of the coin, since I really do prefer to be fair and honest, I also know that Natasha's trips are excellent and a good time is had by all who join.

Thats why we have the new trip forums. Now people know what is commercial, any user (or mod) can buy a commecial post for a low fee and private trips remain free with their own place. Private or commercial it's seprate from the rest of the board, it's clear what is what and it's easy for everyone to use.

wreckwench's trips were in the wrong forum which was hardly a huge deal... new rules take a little time to understand, wreckwench and I worked out those posts just fine after a few days of chatting about them.

Still, this forum is all about feedback so are there any concerns with the new trip forums or their requirements?

Here's a sugestion that works really good in other forums.

Just LOCK the offending threads and DON'T delete it (well, probably it would be a good idea to modify them a bit to replace some words with ***** but that should be it.). And the last post in the locked thead should be from a mod expaining why he did that and/or warning offenders. This method works good at least for two reasons:
1. other people would be able to see what not to do.
2. prevents mods from abusing the power.

I always tell my employees " BECAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT" I think all comments here are falling on deaf ears.
I understand NET DOCs position. I wouldn't let anyone tell me how to run my buisness either.

1) do not get into flame wars; if someone starts a flame war, ignor their post

2) do not reply to personal attacks; if someone attacks you personally do not reply

3) stay out of the DIR section unless you are DIR

Enough said

Nope, doesn't work because the offending threads/posts just keep offending. Its a never ending cycle. They have to pull them.

You missed one.... if your DIR stop harrassing the non-DIR divers.

I for one took action awhile ago to make sure that I wouldn't violate the third rule. However they instead follow me around to shove DIR in my face. Case in point is MHK coming by to say how great his tank labeling is.

It does work, and works very well, that's why I sugested it.
Check out www.gentoo.org forum for example (linux distro)

We have 39765 registered users

Or refer to warren_l's post above That's just 2 examples :)

I wouldn't have had time for this and I could have made some money.
Think I'll go do something that has meaning and play with my Grand daughter.

Every forum out there has a different user community so as much as we want to compare different sites to each other it isn't generally a good comparision. I could show you forums where bans are given out like candy on halloween and no one publically questions a thing... I could show you forums where moderating doesn't exist unless the users do it themselves. Clearly some systems work better than others and at ScubaBoard we tend to fall on the easier side of things with less bans, less thread pulls and less moderating if you can believe that.

I agree with you that a lot depends on user communities, but nonetheless, a lot of things are the same. Especially, if it's also a "family oriented" forum with majority of its members being adults and literate people brought together by the same hobby. Can you argue the 2 advantages that I posted above?

There are a lot of different forums with different guidelines on banning etc. I like some of them, and cannot stand the others. But, as far as I understand, we are trying to make this forum a better place, so, let's take or at least consider the good things that work in other places.

To WW, as far as the threads still being offensive after being locked I have some more to say. You can change really offensive words to **** or @#$@$ to make it less offensive, and maybe, move the thread to "locked threads forum" which can have a warning about possible offensive content. It has it's "cons", but there's much, much more "pros" to this (see 2 pros I posted above). IMHO.
