once you make your way to playa, either by taxi, car, or ADO bus, you can easily walk with your luggage don to the ferry dock. there are porters around if you need help but it is a pretty short walk.not a big deal. after you buy your tickets you wait in the holding area. when it is time to board you make your way down to the pier with your luggage. at the boat they will tag your bags that have to be stowed. you can carry on small items. once in coz you claim your luggage on the pier after disembarking. the bagge guys will match your tags with each bag to make sure no one takes the wrong ones. then you walk with your luggage toward the street and their are taxis waiting there. piece of cake.
I don't think they tag dive gear for some reason.

They didn't ask and I was given tags for each of the 6 ferry rides over the course of 9 days (including Isla Mujeres). The drag from the street where taxi's drop you to the actual ferry is quite bumpy and longer than we expected, but not that big a deal.

I would like to add that getting tags for your bags is quite important. On our last trip the bicycle porter brought our bags down to the dock and we did not get tags. The result was all our bags never made it to COZ as they were left on the docks.
Lucky for us a few hours later the bags made it, but lesson learned, make sure your bags have tags.

Ahhh - good point. Wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks!

Hiring a luggage porter from the Playa ferry cab dropoff area is $5 and I highly recommend doing so if you have more than a a couple of small bags. Dragging bags/yourself means you have to weave through crowds, take everything up the escalator, stand in line, run everything through the "x-ray machine", then drag them to the ferry. It's a long, bumpy and unpleasant experience.

Using a luggage porter allows you to avoid the drag, the escalator and the lines, plus you can get a free ride if there's enough room in the cart.

Going to the ferry dock is all down hill. There is a sidewalk that cuts diagonally through the square, helps to avoid some of the crowds.
Nothing like sitting in the bus station after you have dragged your bags up hill during the heat of the day. The porters should charge more going uphill,:)

We've only been to Coz once (last year). When looking for tickets, we decided to pay the extra $ and just fly right into Coz due to whatever the hassle would be. Is it much of a savings after paying for the ferry both way, shuttle from airport to ferry and back twice, etc? How long does it take?

This has been beaten to death. Total time is about 3 hours plus or minus a quarter hour. Savings can be more than $200 per ticket, usually at least $150. Bus/ferry/porter RT is about $50. There is very little actual "bag dragging". Some consider it a big hassle, some view it as part of the fun. We usually grab a few beers as we exit the airport to enjoy on the bus as we gaze out the windows, then a few more at the ferry to enjoy on top deck with a sea breeze and great view of the ocean.

And another thing, at least from Houston, is we have a choice of several airlines each flying a half dozen flights per day every day to CUN versus one airline flying one or two flights on Saturdays only to CZM. Maybe Southwest will change the game. But the extra flight flexibility has saved our bacon once already when we missed the baggage checkin time by two minutes departing from Houston. They put us on the next flight 90 minutes later, no big deal. If we had been flying into CZM it would have been a bigger deal. And with the additional flights, we can depart to CUN at 9am and be at our Cozumel hotel before the flight to CZM lands so no missed vacay time.

Saving $100 for 6 hours of meandering around, I'll pass :) Plus getting everything in sync to make my flight out without sitting at the airport for 4 hours. It was pretty slick flying into COZ and driving 5 minutes into town (maybe 10). Almost forgot, it was HOT when we went. Walking all around and waiting in the heat. LOL.
