Chris-

That's great that we'll be there at the same time. I don't have anything arranged yet. I haven't been back there since I got certified there. I want to get to Cathedrals over on Lanai and also over to Molokini. Since we'll be staying in Ka'anapali, I'll probably go Extended Horizons for Lanai (out of Lahaina) and drive down to Kihei to get to Molokini. I'm sure I'll be doing more than that, though.

Where will you be staying, and do you have anything arranged? Let's coordinate! PM me or call me on my cell (I'm in Florida until Sunday).

We dove all over Maui during our visit. We'd go up to the west end and do a couple of dives and then grab some fresh tanks and head down south. It isn't exactly a huge island. :)

you sure did - you did more diving in that month than I've done in my first year of SCUBA! I just gotta find some more buddy's that don't mind doing more than 1 dive in a day I guess.... I really enjoyed being able to join you guys on a few of your shore dives too.

Tim it was a real pleasure diving with you. I like diving with people that take care of themselves and don't get all needy. You're a very good diver and a pleasure to spend a surface interval with too.

We'll do it again.

Hey Guys,

I'm in the process of booking the vacation from the 8th till the 13th. I'm also just in the process of my OW cert.

Any suggestions for me? Hotel, beach/area of maui, other activities (luau), diving? Costs would be greatly appreciated as well (diving only).

I've heard about this catamarang (sp?) w/ a bbq, drinks, diving, snorkeling... anyone know about it?

Feel free to call me: 310-951-9399

Thanks,
Gerry

CAN'T WAIT!! :dazzler1:
I, personally, would steer clear of Maui Dive Shop, but that's just me. They don't cater to divers so much as they do tourists... and that's not good in my opinion.

I would have to disagree with the suggestion to stay in "West Maui" (Lahaina, Kaanapali, etc.) vs. "South Maui" (Kihei, Wailea). First off, the number one boat dive there is Molokini. From Kihei, you're about 45 minutes (boat) closer and 20 minutes (car). Cuts down on travel A LOT!

Second, most of the quality dive ops (Ed Robinson's, Mike Severns, B&B) operate out of the Kihei boat ramp... at least the ones going to Molokini.

Third, Kihei gets more sun (and less rain) than anywhere else on the island. I have stayed in West Maui when the weather has just gotten socked right in, and it wasn't all that pleasant outside. A drive down to Kihei was great those days... but a bit time consuming. :)

Finally, if you're doing your certification while you're there, check out Maui Dreams Dive Co. ( http://www.mauidreamsdiveco.com/ )in Kihei. Their OW cert is $250, and includes books, all gear rentals, dives and certification card costs. Many other shops will charge you less on the sticker, but add on the OW crew pack (~$50); require you to purchase the "personal equipment" (mask, snorkel, fins); and or pay for your c-card when you're done (~$20). On top of all this, MDDC limits their class size to 4 students, and all students in the class are completing the same level of certification (other shops merge different classes under one instructor).

I hope this helps,

Lahaina and S. Kihei have very similar weather patterns. The tradewinds are usually out of the NE. Lahaina is in the lee of W. Maui mountains. The Wailea and the south end of Kihei are in the lee/rain shadow of Haleakala. In both case, as you go a few miles north, the weather changes rapidly. Kahana, for example, or even the N. end of Kaanapali (Pepto Bismol building / Embassy Suites) beach have much more rain than the main resort section of Kaanapali (Black rock and south). Similarly, the north end of Kihei will have a lot more wind and a bit more rain that the south end.

But the original poster is going in AUGUST! A bit of cooling tradewinds or wraparound is a GOOD thing.

Very true Charlie - I live in Lahaina (Dry as a bone) and work 5 miles north of Kaanapali (in Kahana) where it rains nearly every night (as it is at the moment ... I'm sitting in my trench coat still dripping from the rain in the parking lot  ) but August is the "HOT" month of the year, so the rainy areas (which is usually at night) it becomes quite welcome

For the past 2 years we have had very unusually large amounts of rain in the daytime December - March so anyone that visited during that time was likely to experience what KrisB did... spoiled a lot of days at the beach for visitors, but brought a lot of rainbows and waterfalls. Plus it ended the drought we'd had for so many years...

Aloha, Tim

We're going to be there from July 30-Aug 9, and try to get as much diving in as possible. Our first priority is getting our AOW, then we'll shore dive and do a charter to the Backwall. I'm sure looking forward to using my new BC somewhere besides a swimming pool!

I'm going to try to post when/where we're going to shore dive, likely the night before we go, so hopefully ya'll can do the same and some of us can get together to dive. FYI, we'll stay in Kaanapali, so most of our shore diving will be around that area for convenience.

Hey Tim, how much is a gallon of gas now?
