I've been considering getting a back plate, because I plan to do some classes in the future that will require doubles. My question is, since over half of my diving will still be with a single tank, (right now I use AL 100's, but I'm in the process of converting to steel 120's and 100's) will I want to hang on to my regular BC for single tanks or will the plate be good for both? Or would I be better off to go with a BC that can be used for single or doubles (I've looked at the Balck Diamond also).

Not looking to establish why one system is better than the other, just would like to know what other's experience has been.

The plate will work for both and given the size of the singles you're planning on using you'll probably find the BP/wing more stable for your singles than a BCD. Unless there is some compelling reason (like teaching) that you need to keep your old BCD then I wouldn't hesitate to sell it.

Given the range of superior options you have, I personally think investing in a black-diamond isn't a very good long term investment.

The only reason why I still have my BCD is that I need it for my DM class. Have used a single tank with a BP/W for the last 40 dives and experienced no problems.

Is that to take or to teach a DM class?

I bought a new BC last year when I got back into diving (after a 9 year hiatus) and after 4 months, I traded it on a backplate. I dove singles up until the last month where I have gone primarily to doubles. I liked the BP/W set up over the BC set up for singles primarily because I'm no small fry and it definitely helped reduce my drag. Sometimes I still wished I had a basic BC, but that is only when I'm not in my drysuit and could use some pockets. If I had to go back to a BC it would only be the Zeagle Ranger.

I am taking my rescue diver class this month and plan to take the DM class starting right after. The instructors already know that it will be next to impossible to get my out of my BP/W. In fact the one instructor encourages it because it makes the other candidates evaluate a different style rig.

........but they know better he he.....but that is the whole jist of things (enlightenment). My best friend (and also manager of my LDS) is teaching my Rescue and I have slowly started to convert him........at least he dives doubles in a BP/W. But if they were to cut my strap in one of the "scenarios", there WOULD be hell to pay :D.

Needless to say I think it is good training to for people to see different configurations. As a DM, Instructor, etc., you should never assume that every diver you have (or even a dive buddy) is going to adhere to your "recreational" principles. I never thought I'd be in a BP/W but since I have been in one, I will never be willing to go back. Now if I can get my LDS to start carrying more tech gear......I'm working on it :D
