Well, I made a trip down to Florida this past weekend. After MUCH confusion, we finally figured out our dive plan.

Friday and Sunday we went to Vortex Springs, and Saturday we drove to Destin to dive the gulf.

Friday was great! We got to Vortex at around noon. We managed to get 5 dives in that day. Their was only 2 other groups of divers there, so we almost always had the water to ourselves. It was my first time to Vortex, so I had a lot of fun playing around in the tunnels and in the cavern chasing eels. Got some pretty good pictures that day too.

Saturday we headed for Destin. We dove with with the dive shop ScubaTech on their boat the SeaCobra. I just have to say thank you to the crew. These people were extremly nice. They made what could have turned out to be a bad dive a lot of fun. I would highyl recommend using ScubaTech if you are ever in the area. Anyway, onto the trip. It was a pretty windy day, and the water was anything but smooth. The trip was almost called off. However, they decided to go. We went out to the bridge rubble to play around there for our first dive. The visibilty was less than 15ft, and the water was near 60degrees F so it was a little chilly. We did a nice relaxing 35 mintue dive before I called it due to getting slightly chilled. Did not see much for marine life besides angle fish and a lot of jellyfish.

The second dive was on a sunken fuel barge. The water at 75ft was 58degrees. After 20 minutes we called the dive and surfaced. Poor vis, but we saw a dolphin, a headfish, and a bunch more jellyfish.

On Sunday we almost called the dive because of the air temp. However, cooler heads (no pun intended) prevailed, and we dove again. So we headed back to Vortex. WOW! talk about a bunch of classes! I counted four classes, and close to thirty students. So needless to say the water was crowded. We decided to finish off one of our tanks from the day before that still had 1750psi in them. Took some pictures, but the vis was pretty bad so i don't know if they turned out or not. We decided to just do one more long dive, and then leave. So the last dive we spent pretty much goofing off. We chased each other around the tunnels, into the cavern, and through any crack we could fit through. The vis in the cavern was about 5 feet when we entered. We also spent a lot of time doing somersaults, swimming on our backs, and standing on our heads during safety stops. Like I said, just goofing off. After 50 minutes with 1250psi left we called the dive and went home.

Anyway, it was well worth it. The weekend was a lot of fun.

Anyone else do any diving this weekend?

Big James - sounds like a pretty good weekend of diving to me! I'm quite envious of you - I was supposed to leave for Destin this past Friday (A couple minor household disasters and holiday scheduling kaiboshed my trip about a month ago). Instead of diving in warm waters (yes, those 60 deg waters are warm for me!) and catching some rays(on my ghostly white body!) on the beach, I shovelled my driveway 5 times this weekend! The worst storm we've had this winter - easily a foot of snow and 60mph winds - all weekend. As I groped and fondeld my new BC, all I could think about was I should be in Florida.

I was also planning on diving with Scubatech. I was visiting last year, and found them to be very helpful and just plain "nice people". Stone gave me the info that "refreshed" my memory. I was also planning on going to Vortex, for the simple reason, I've never been there.

Well, I'll just have to save the deniro and make better plans for next year - should only be about another month before we can break up the ice and jump into some 35 deg water!

Sounds like a pretty good time to me! When I was at Vortex a few weeks ago, we didnt go thru any tunnels, and could only go the cave entrance (OW Cert dives ya know). I dont think I even saw any tunnels anywhere? I know they were working on some in the newer area off to the side. I never saw any eels either, but Ive heard about them a lot.

Our plans for this summer arent finalized yet, but tentatively we're spending a week in Destin, and I plan to go out with ScubaTech at least 2 different days. Stone turned me onto them. I drove by thier place while I was there, and was going to stop by and visit them, but was running short on time so opted to just find my hotel instead.

Id like to dive some of the Liberty Ships offshore. Not sure about the bridge rubble or the barges, although I suppose any dive would be enjoyable. The water should be much warmer when Im there (80+) :)

Glad you had a good time.

Yeah, it really was a lot of fun. You guys will not be sorry using ScubaTech. We had wanted to do he Liberty Ships, but decided to stay in closer because of the weather. Hopefully I can do those next time we go.

Scott, your nuts. 35 degree water. No thanks. Well, maybe. Ok, I would try it. Being from Wisconsin originally, I still have some cold blood left in me.

Scuby, I am talking about the man made tunnels they ave there. They are each about 30 feet in length on the bottom at about 30ft deep. As for the eels, you can only find them in the cavern or cave. They are fun to try to catch! LOL.

I guess I wasnt paying very good attention. As OW students doing our cert dives, Im sure our instructor made sure we kept away from overheads. Im sure I'll dive Vortex again someday and I'll have to check them out!

They are a lot of fun to play follow the leader in. One has a gap in it, and you can flip your body down into it. Make sure no one else is in there before you do it because I surprised someone by dropping in behind them seemingly from no where. I have some pictures of them, if I get time, I can try to scan them to show you.

Big James, sound like you had a good time. I went to Vortex on Sat, but since I was by my self I did not dive. I just didn't feel comfortalbe diving solo, and everybody I saw looked to be classes or cavers. There were a ton of people there. I will get back to Vortex pretty soon. James do remember after you left Vortex going back to town. My dad lives at the first road (1/4 mile) with the three long chicken houses. I hope to go visit more often this summer, and dive each trip.

I know this is a new topic, but what happend to Morrison Spring. We drove down to Morrison also on Sat. and it was closed. Do they shut down until summer or was it due to the river being up and making the spring muddy?

I know where you are talking about. Must be nice living that close to somewhere you can dive! Sucks that you could not do anyt that day though.

As for Morrison, it flooded. We were going to head over there on Sunday, but due to flooding, it was closed.
