This thread is a thing of beauty. Never heard of using baby shampoo. Definitely making a trip to Wally World for mask defogger before the next dive!

I prefer commercial defogger or spit over baby shampoo as it burns my eyes.

Never run out of spit, never run out and never was asked to loan it out. I have, however, swapped spit, seldom when it involved a mask. Although there was that time with the mask, cuffs and flogger....

2 years after starting the shampoo and well over 100 dives with no fogging ever--regardless of water/air. You have to put on the right amount and wipe it so no smearing. Sometimes I find a little streaking after donning the mask while gearing up- one mask clear in the water solves that. My spit never worked well--am sure this differs for different people. The baby shampoo (& fresh water) also inside BC (after dumping salt water of course) for rinsing also good. Yet another use I have found is on wetsuit when rinsing --you know, the pee thing.

Guess you aren't worth spit....rinsing with pee? I won't ever borrow your mask

Aboard our vessel we use the lavender fragrance baby shampoo mixed with water. I like the lavender type as the gold color fragrance has too sweet a smell for me. We spray our mix into our and divers masks, shake out excess and just put the mask on the face. Any bubbles disappear once you hit the water. Works great if the mask is fairly clean. Don't believe in spitting in a mask, medics have advised that this practice can lead to a case of pink eye.

With absolutely no medical background, I disagree with those medics. Spit won't hurt ya, I did it for years. But I have heard of this warning about mask spit before. As well, my mom always warned about pink eye--especially if you pick up a newspaper someone else had....I'll never know the truth about that. She said you also can get tricanosis from eating hot dogs not fully cooked. Hope I never find out what tricanosis is, or if I spelled it right.

I've been spitting in my mask since the 80s. Maybe the medics didn't know you are supposed to rinse the mask afterward. :)

To each his own. Personally I'll stick with baby shampoo or commercial product. By the way I quit spitting in my mask in 1960.
