I need some help with my seacure mouthpiece. I have an Atomic Z2 regulator. I had a clear seacure mouthpiece on it for the last four years with no issues. I bought a pink one in April this year to replace it with and now the regulator is free flowing and will not stop. I took it into my local Dive shop. They took a look at it and in addition to a complete overhaul, they have determined that the issue with the free flowing is the seacure mouthpiece because when he put the atomic mouthpiece back on, there it does not free flow. I have never heard such a thing! I am emotionally attached both my regulator and my secure mouthpiece so using anything else is unacceptable but I don’t want to have to put up with this. In March, I had to replace my regulator with a rental one because of this for the whole trip in Honduras. I have a size 2 mouthpiece on it now—- I had originally ordered a size one and it was too small to attach so I re-ordered a size 2. Can someone help me determine if this is really a cause and what I can do to make this pink seacure mouthpiece work? They are expensive but right now I don’t care. I just want one that doesn’t free flow. Is there possibly another brand that’s proven to work with these regulators? It’s very strange that I had went on for four years and now my new one does this. Any help would be great thank you so much.

How does the freeflow start?
If it’s bumped against the tank, or if I purge it manually is a couple of ways. It just started on its own underwater when I jumped in off the Dive boat in March. I was shown the old stick your finger in the hole trick and the Dive shop owner told me if I could put up with that to use it, but I don’t think I can put up with that. He told me he has seen this issue about 3 times over the course of 10 years. I do NOT want to go back to the original mouthpiece!

It free flows while in your mouth?

I'd compare the three mouthpieces to see how close of a match up they are. Carefully trim to match the clear or atomic mouthpiece

I use an atomic ST1 & Seacure "X Type 2" without any problems

I found this looking at the atomic service manual re. uncontrolled free-flow:
Check mouthpiece type. Non-factory mouthpieces may cause this.
Cracking effort set too low.
AFC Plunger stuck in max. depth position.

Thank you for this. I can’t believe that is in the manual. Not sure what a cracking effort or plunger is but the LDS completely serviced the reg and gave me a spare atomic mouthpiece to take with me to Honduras in a couple weeks just in case I can’t deal with it. I have thrown the original and clear one away so can’t compare but it gives me pause to really look at it. Husband has the same exact regulator in a secure mouthpiece on his so we will be looking at that too thank you very much for your reply.

Yes, turn the adjuster in or ask the shop to adjust a little more cracking effort into the micro adjuster but if you like the way it breathes with the mouthpiece better to prevent the free flowing in the first place.

I agree! I just want it to stop and behave normally like it has previously for many years with a seacure mouthpiece! I just don’t get it, but we are looking at this really hard and comparing to my husbands which is identical to mine.

It likely can be adjusted to stop doing it but if the mouthpiece doesn’t offer the same back pressure then it can happen and since it doesn’t happen with the original mouthpiece everything seems to be in spec.
