I have the ST1 and yes the adjustment knob on the Atomics only has a small effect on the cracking pressure, quite unlike my Oceanic regs. And if you point the mouthpiece upside down the inch or so pressure difference is enough to crack the reg to freeflow. I think that's normal. To prevent free flow underwater I point the mouthpiece down when removing from mouth, and when exiting I turn the adjustment knob fully clockwise and am careful not to point up.

Another thing about these regs is it's easy to jam the knob either fully open or closed, so once I feel the end of knob travel I don't force it against the stop.
