I found a local bank, not a national chain. They said there is no conversion fee. The Wells Fargo 3% fee was the last straw. I'd been with them for almost twenty years.

I like the Bhtmec2 of doing a small transaction and checking online. I think I'll need to make a special trip back to Mexico to check it out.

Sounds like a good excuse to travel and dive...... Good Luck

Your comment isn't strictly correct you can exchange US$ but there is a limit of $1500, which for the majority of tourist would be more than enough.

if you change dollars in banks you need to have your passport plus a photocopy of the same (thats the way in Bancomer). If you are only changing 100 or so then your time is worth something and rather than wait in line to save 10 peos go to an exchange house. If you are exchanging a larger sum then it might be worth the time spent in line (lots of locals exchange and the wait can be long).
Now if you use an ATM even with the extra charge the bank has for using the ATM you still come out with a good exchange rate. For example I did a withdrawal on Sat. and the rate with the fee was 11.76/dollar. Another point. Some ATM machines have been hacked and your information can be stollen. I would avoid ATM at supermarkets etc and use the ones in the banks which have security camera etc. Never hurts.

Check your bank. I do business with two natioanl chains. One charges a fee for international exchange, one does not.
Needless to say that I use the less expensive one and get the day's exchange in Euro, peso or Cdn dollars from my US bank.
It is strictly a function of your bank, but most ATMs in Mexico I have used (a lot of em) charge a very nominal fee for use of the machine.
