I agree with this statement as well but do you not think that sometimes people, and jepuskar has pointed this out on several occasions, use the net as a shield. They know they can say whatever they want no matter how hurtful or damaging without fear of being confronted physically. All they have to do is turn the computer off and it all goes away. If you say something on a board you should be willing to sit at a table with that person and have a conversation about the subject without feeling uncomfortable. Yes, have a strong opinion but don't hide behind the web.

I agree with you totally, but is this about what was said or who said it?

I can honestly say that I am very ashamed of some members of this board. Recently, we had a VERY HIGH profile member of the INTERNATIONAL dive community join our board and certain reactions from members left me at awe.
I agree, a bit of respect and understand goes a long way.

dont know about you guys, but I have spoken to many a director and chief executive, and treat them as any normal person, i don't put them on a pedestal.

while in italy a director came out to see how we were getting on and i put him straight on a few things and told him exactly what i thought of the company and how dissapointed we were with how we were being treated.

after my little speech he thanked me for be honest and couldn't explain why we were treated so badly.

every now and then they need to be taken to the coal face to see it first hand!!

Forgive me for answering these in reverse order SeaJay...

I just don't get why JJ's presence should result in him taking a beating for being so damned good at what he's done

Makes no sense to me..

The man said he heard he was getting beaten up on the boards and came to check that out, it only seems right that those with real or perceived problems should speak to "the horse's mouth" with their issues, instead of beating a bad CS drum around and around the boards. Taking their bad experiences to customers instead of the CEO doesn't do anything to help them, and only hurts the company's reputation.

For those that say this should be done in a less public forum, perhaps, but JJ came here. If I have a problem with Ma Bell, and the old bag wanders by on the street I'm giving her an earful. It's true that GUE names/email addresses are attainable and it's possible that service problems could be handled more privately and it appears that the posters have been pursuing these avenues as well, but if the CEO of the company stuck his head into a message board, I'd air it there too, u bet ur a$$. This is people's SCUBA gear man, you remember what it's like to receive your new Halcyon wing and set up your rig? How would you feel about JJ if that wing was defective, or worse it was defective and they said, So sad, you broke your wing. What if you sold your old BC to buy that wing and were reduced to RENTAL :upset: gear by the situation.

Last I looked, by the way... The head honchos at PADI or SSI weren't poking their heads in here. Nor were the head honchos at Scubapro or SeaQuest. And guess what? My bet is that the head honchos of those organizations don't actively dive. JJ's an avid diver... He's one of us.

I totally agree there, if you take away all the negative connotations of GUE vs. stroke JJ is the man. Pioneer, innovator, world-record diver, and according to many first hand accounts an all around good guy=-) It's pleasing to me to see someone in his position participate in the sport, and in this community. But considering the circumstances, and tone of his message I think the reception he found here was cordial enough. There's always a heckler to keep the signal to noise constant, he's a big boy he did alright.

he's a big boy he did alright.

Hehehee... That he did.

I was very interested in the popular reaction, though, whether I thought it was inappropriate or not. I find it amazing how people react to someone like JJ... Or for that matter, any well-known and accomplished diver, leader, and businessman.

I've heard rumors that when GI3 shows his head in a public forum, he catches quite a bit of "stuff" from everyone as well. I find it interesting in that whether the person is thought of in a positive light or negative one, the result is the same... He's swamped with questions, answers, opinions, and the like. Whether people claim that they treat accomplished people specially or not, the fact is that they do treat them specially.

...And in that position, I can't imagine that it's not uncomfortable.

It makes me wonder how I will be treated after my world record dives. Will I be the target of special treatment, good or bad? Will I be "singled out?" Will I adapt okay?

Anyway, I suppose that's wishful - or fearful - thinking on my part. Perhaps y'all will still poke fun at me. :) I just can't help but to think that JJ'd rather be treated like a normal person... Which definitely did not happen here.

Hell some guy threw eggs at Arnie the other day,

...As in, "Arnold Schwarzenegger?" You're kidding...

Man, some people.

Hey, did I tell you that I occassionally got the opportunity to hang out with him a few years back? Yep. Him and Jay Leno, too. It was pretty cool. They're nice guys, really. Arnie's short. :D

They were both avid motorcyclists, and would occassionally stop by the Rock Store outside of L.A. The couple of times I went, it was a relatively small group of us, too... Like 15 riders... Right there with some hot-shot celeb. Funny.

The first time I met Arnold, he was wearing a "Terminator" leather jacket that would have made any self-respecting motorcyclist cringe with "hokey factor." Of course, when I realized it was really "The Terminator" himself... Well... There's only one guy in the world that could wear that jacket and not look like a cornball... And it was him. :D

Jay's bike had a turbine motor in it from a Bell helecopter. To date, I believe it's the only jet-powered bike in the world. Sounded a lot like a commercial jetliner. He once told me a story about getting the massive exhaust too close to a car... With predictable "melting bumper" results. Lol...

Sorry... Not trying to hijack... My point is that all of these guys... Jay, Arnold, and even JJ... Are pretty normal people, and are more comfortable, generally, in groups that treat them as such.

I know I felt that way back when I had my little "fifteen minutes" of fame. :)

Now, back to your regularly scheduled program... :D

We may need a custom built acrylic case to put you in like the other Bling-Bling in the living room. LOL

i don't condone this action. it was wrong and shouldn't be repeated but there has been alot of negative coverage of arnie and whenever you go to a college campus the kids tend to feel their politics much more ferverently (sp?)

Cal State Univ. Long Beach has a large non-anglo student body and when all the stories of arnie's past racist remarks came out CSULB was the wrong place to be

also that was the day arnie chose not to debate with the other candidates

also arnie has chosen to use former gov. pete wilson old people and wilson was not well liked for his anti-union stand

arnie is becoming a lightning rod for too many issues.

the republicans would have been served by one candidate. former LA mayor reardon would have won but oh well now

By the way I laughed at Minnesota for electing Jessie Ventura, but he's an intellect compared to arnie. who's laughing now?

my poor poor state

all of us native californians are just "thrilled" about all of this
