I don't see any value in practicing something like this. Just do the dive and practice things as they naturally occur during the dive.

Gray, I suspect you didn't need 50 dives to hold your first shallow stop . . . :)

Especially for those of us who primarily shore dive, direct ascents may be in rather short supply. I do go out periodically and specifically practice them. That way, when that rare boat charter day comes alone, I'm in shape for it.
 
one of the more frustrating events as lynne said, in diving, is learning a controlled accent. its not easy. i am a newbie and practice this EVERY DIVE I DO....i ask my buddy, can we hold every five feet starting at 25 or so. by 10ft if i am light on air, its a mother to hold it.

yesterday we did a dive that took us to 13 ft and we had a wonderful time hovering and swimming through a sunken plane , under the wings and just hanging. I would not have been able to do that 20 dives ago, i would have popped up. so yes practice does and will help you .

keep diving and do this skill each time you dive. I liked the pool idea if you can find one. i only have the quarry.. :) hope this helped
