That's good too. :)
Joking about paranoia aside, it really comes down to a "form follows function" decision for me. If I see a functional reason to wear a suit that is green on one side, red on the other, has electric purple patches on the legs, and a reflective white hood, then I'm going to swallow my pride and be the dork wearing the clown suit.

Drop the functional blather and I'd be wearing black. I love black.

I can honestly say that I have never looked at another diver and thought "you look like a dork" :)

I happen to like black, and also find it very easy to find scuba gear in black :)

on a dive last weekend, we had very bad visibility (about 10') and my gear is all black, except that I was carrying a bright yellow dsmb on my rear d-ring. After the dive, my buddy commented that there were parts of the dive, where that dsmb was the only thing he could see of me.

Wow...10' is "very bad" viz to you...there are more dives than not that 10' would be fantastic around here!

I should qualify that with, 10' viz was very bad for the site, we have lots of places around here with less :)

I got annoyed with losing my buddy in bad vis and all black gear, so my gear has lots of little flashes of color. And one big flash of color: http://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Surfing-Rafting-Snorkel-Swimming/dp/B001L7YQLA

I may look like an oompa loompa, but nobody will be losing me!

Actually, I love the silly beanie because it keeps me a little warmer without being as irritating as the hood, and it keeps my hair in control and out of my mask.

I prefer black, but color is a secondary choice. I buy cheap wetsuits and currently have three: I have a Sea Elite X-Flex 3/2 that is black/blue; a Neosport 5mm that is all black and a TommyDSports 3mm that is black/purple. Yes, I said purple. The guys I dive with call it my "Barney suit." It's the one I'm wearing in my avatar photo.

My friends may have their fun at my expense when I'm wearing it, but it only cost me about 50 bucks new, plus shipping, and it is durable and well made.

I've looked at another diver and thought, "You look like a dork," but it was usually because they were rototilling across a silty bottom and ruining the viz!

I'm all for visible, and yellow is the most visible color, at least in our waters. It's better than white. Plus black and yellow are nicely dramatic together, and since black is unavoidable . . .

good point, I need to rephrase my earlier statement:

I can honestly say that I have never looked at another diver and said "you dress like a dork" :)

Besides, compression under water makes everyone look thinner. If you don't believe me, and you have a recent PADI OW training manual, find the page where they talk about air compression and they show the same diver with a soda bottle full of air at 0ft and at 30 ft. You're supposed to notice that the air volume is half of what it was at the surface, but he also looks much thinner in the second picture. Diving is very slimming. ;-)

Fixed that fer ya! ;)

Why do people always resort to gear to attempt to solve training problems? If you are having trouble losing your buddy, you need better dive-buddy proceedures. If the vis is really that bad, even neon yellow or white only gives you a few more feet before it too disapears.
