Hi Barb

well listen: 1200canadians is 782us dollars? Is nt it ? WOW ? I as a poor poor student had to quit diving i think (o: If i lived in Canada...
for 600 us $ i bought 2 of these babes. But as you know i was a spec. customer. BUT i can maybe arrange something for you. Let me call the dealer for you tommorow morning and maybe i can fix you something.

The price i think will be between 450 and 500 US-dollars but this will include a Backup! (Atx50 i think). I bought one Atx200 for 300 but with no back ups because i dive doubles. I will put some pics these days on the internet of my rig. You can see the routing of the hoses...

By the way: I think this price will be a little bit little higher because you live in Canada. But this should nt be higer then 7.5% total. (taxes). You can also buy a Apeks Atx200 at www.scubastore.com for 485 us-dollars (no backup inlcuded btw) or the cheaper but nothing less the Atx-DS4! For only 300us dollars!!! I suggest you buy that one ! 300 us-dollars plus 7.5% vat and some shipping cost still would nt be more then
350 us-dollars!!! So this is really cheaper! if you are low on us-dollars OR canadian dollars :D , like i am on EURO'S, buy the DS4 !! You will not regret it.

I will call my dealer for you if you send me an email about this! And if you are sure that you want the Apeks Atx200. Because in that case my dealer is cheaper. Note that my dealer has nt the cool DS4 in stock but only the atx50 (normal version, which i really dislike)

Ok have to go to sleep now. good night all,

Xerxes

Xerxes you are too kind!
I can afford to pay for the reg. I was just wanting to be sure that it is worth that much money.
I really think I should buy it at a LDS in Canada where I live. This way if anything is wrong with it I can have it repaired or replaced without having to ship it back to Europe.
My husband says spend the money - get a really good reg but not over the internet - NO WARRANTY NO SERVICE
Thanks for your help and advice and very kind offer.
:)

He Barb (o:

"Xerxes you are too kind!"

[X]Thank you.

I can afford to pay for the reg. I was just wanting to be sure that it is worth that much money.

[X] Dont worry it is worth it.

I really think I should buy it at a LDS in Canada where I live. This way if anything is wrong with it I can have it repaired or replaced without having to ship it back to Europe.

[X] This is indeed the easiest way.

My husband says spend the money - get a really good reg but not over the internet - NO WARRANTY NO SERVICE

[X]By the way you can also look at your husband at a very nice way and ask him to pay for the reg. :D Sometimes this helps with my parents. Unfortunatly not always. (kidding ofcourse)

Good luck and have fun, Xerxes

p.s. Can you put some pics online of your divings? I am curious how Canada looks like underwater.

:D My husband calls it "fluttering" my eyelashes while saying pleeeease honey.
Seriously, I can pay myself - I make very nice pottery (so I'm told).

Regarding pictures: I can't show you any of me since I'm still trying to figure out the computer and I just got a digital camera. I need more time to learn.
If you're really interested I can tell you some web sites to see shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. This is where I go diving, also the river (seaway) that connects them to the ocean St.Lawrence River. Lots of good wrecks to visit. In the river the vis is really good and the water temp is warm 70 F. The lakes are colder and vis varies. One thing I really enjoy is the current - can be very fast- it's like flying through the water - very fun! :D

Hi Barb

sure why not send me your internet adresses. I will check it out. My uncle lives near Toronto and have invited me a couple of times now. Maybe now i might wanna visit Canada now i know there are nice wrecks and strong currents there... he he sounds fun.

You have to think very carefully about what a warantee is worth. What does it mean to have a warantee? For a standard limited liability warantee that is based on defects in workmanship only, warantee is a form of insurance and should be treated as such. This means that to calculate the value you multiply the value of the insurance payout * the probability of failure.

Lets do the calculations with a regulator that is $600 (including tax) at the LDS and that is $350 online.

Lets assume that failure means that the whole unit has to be replaced (maximum value of the warantee policy). In most cases warantee would be just one small part.

If the probability of a failure that requires full replacement is:

1/10000 then the value of the warantee is 6 cents
1/1000 then the value of the warantee is 60 cents
1/100 then the value of the warantee is 6 dollars
1/10 60 dollars
1/1 600 dollars

Because you are saving 250, the failure rate has to be very high to make the warantee worth it (this does not take into account multiple failures over time resulting in multiple claims). Regulators probabily don't fail at 1/20 or 1/100 rates so most likely the warantee is simply not worth it.

In addition, if the unit is going to fail while you are using it underwater, having the warantee basically has no advantage. With or without the warantee it is still going to fail.

I am all for supporting the LDS, but one of the reasons to buy should NOT be for warantee.

In the case of regulators that get free parts for long as they are serviced to mfg spec, the calculations are different. You potentially save 35/year in parts, but are still required to spend 35-50 year in service. Depending on how often you feel that you need to get the reg serviced, it could put the LDS purchase into the reasonable realm.

If you were planning to get the reg serviced yearly, then you break even at the 8th year. I personally mentally depreciate all large purchases at 5 years or less, therefore breakeven at 8 years is not very useful to me. In addition if the price spread is larger (i.e. 1000 and 600) then it takes even longer for the service to break even.

If you were planning to get the regulator serviced every other year, then it would take even longer to break even.

when you buy and you are expecting "service" as a result. Try to put an actual value on what that service means. If you had 250 in your pocket, would you take 200 out and rip it up? Of course not, so make sure that you are getting something of equivalent value in return for the extra money you spend at the LDS.

1) Convenience, I buy things from the LDS when I haven't planned properly and need something now or if it is small and too much trouble to buy online
2) Fit, I buy things from the LDS when I need to try them on to find one that fits just right (i.e. wetsuits)
3) Price I buy things from the LDS when they are comparable in price to buying online

seabass good point :thumb:

Good explaining. Abouth the parts: some company's offer "free" parts: these are worth almost nothing compared to the servicing costs. MK25 parts are only $5,- dollars.

I'm thinking of putting a long hose on my ATX200 but I know the primary port is a bit larger. For those who have done it, how did you deal with this?

Hi

You can use the standard port for the Apeks Atx200. Dont use the 1/2"(big port)port. You can use this port though by buying the Apeks 2.10m (7ft)longhose. Whic is really expensive and very hard to get. Apeks' longhose is standard 2.30m. Which is really too long!

Just buy the cheaper longhose with the standard 3/8" port. I wil very soon make some pics of my rig and put on the internet. Really soon this time as i have my vacation right now.(i promised this before but i will do it this time)

Xerxes

Hi

one other thing: when you select a longhose: take a small (thin) and supple and flexible hose. I like the Halcyon's very much.

Good luck, Xerxes
