Hi Barb

Cant you get Zeagle Regs in stead of the prooven Apeks regs then? If not you may also wanna consider idd Beuchat. These are also good regs. The performance of a reg is btw not the only thing that counts!!! A combination of different properties of a reg. make a reg a good reg or a bad one. Beuchat is a good reg. so if you cant get the Apeks line go for the Beuchat.
Although one minor downside is that the parts of Beuchat are also difficult to find(here in Europe maybe not for you Northen Americans)

Hi Eric

you see when choosing a reg. you consider more then one aspect. I understand it is difficult to figure out which aspects and why but do a little bit investigation, ask around (also important: Ask from the people that really know somethings. Like the real pro's or tech divers. Their expriences are alot more than you think. These organisations have sometimes more then 40000 (and more !)hours of expriences with a specific reg!) These people can provide you with invaluable expriences and knowledge that you cant get anywhere else!!!
A couple of days ago we had a nice conversation about Mares and Apeks regs. Many good reasons and aspects of regs were discusses. Read this thread! It will be a nice intro for you!
Good luck and if you have still questions dont hestitate to ask,

The Zeagle uses an apeks as its 1st stage (so I'm told). At least this is true for the Zeagle I was considering. The reason I'm not going with it is the 2nd stage is larger = more drag than I want. Also the Apeks ATX line is boasting 25% lighter and a smaller profile + the wonderful breathing qualities + defendability. Why would I want anything else?
I hear the Beuchats are good the VX10 Iceberg is a consideration for me.
Someone has told me that US Divers/Aqua Lung uses Apeks in their set ups so now I have another option. Things are definitley looking up. I'm learning alot and this helps me feel more confident in my equipment.
So much to learn, so little time in the day. ;-0

good site for info. except it says there is only 1 dealer in Canada and that they're located on the west coast. I live closer to the east.

The Apeks "dealer" quoted on their site is actually the distributor. Apeks and Seaquest were bought recently by Aqualung. The regs are distributed in the US by Seaquest and in Canada by Aqualung. Any Canadian Aqualung dealer can order an Apeks reg but you probably want to buy from someone who stocks them and is familiar with the service.

I live in Toronto and bought an Apeks TX100 a year ago. I found my dealer by e-mailing Aqualung Canada and asking them who were the Apeks dealers near Toronto. They gave me 4 (see quoted e-mail below) but I later found a couple more. I bought at Dive Source in Whitby, a good shop.

"Our apeks dealers for your area are: Dive Source ph#905 668-8566, Divers Down ph#519 434-7258, Dive Tech Traning ph# 613 923-5101 or Canadian Sport Subs ph# 613 966-8903.

Thanks,Debbie"

There are 2 numbers above with 613 area codes, which is, I believe, Ottawa. Give em a call.

For that matter, why do people buy the ATX200 over the ATX50? Or ATX40?

I can see that the AT20 is a warm water only reg... So it has no heat sink built into it, helping to prevent freezing during really cold dives. But why choose then the 50 over the 40? Or 100 over the 50? Or 200 over the 100?

Can anyone tell me the basic design differences?

Hi

differences: DS4 has non swivel/turret ports. Whic are fixed. These are best choice if you consider the tx50 line. Tx100 and tx200: tx200 breathes a little bit better. Looks cooler :D and has a Booster for your IP as you go deeper(nothing really important really, they say it is but i think it is more adv. than real advantage). Also with the Atx200 the routing is better then the tx100. The tx100 is again a little bit easier in hose routing comapared with DS4(tx50). Note: these hosing routing is only important and sometimes a little bit difficult when you are diving with doubles.

Very good! :thumb: Fast learner.

he he. Good luck

One last thing you should know is that big second stage are better when you are diving "very" deep. Like 66ft-130ft. Because of the bigger diaphragm. You may want to know this.

Just out of curiousity, why did you buy ATX100 and not the ATX200?

I bought the TX100 not the ATX. At the time I bought my TX the ATX line had been announced but were not available in Canada. I have a very large head (not swelled from ego, just an 8 1/4 hat size) and am a large guy. The size of the TX 100 reg didn't bother me and I wanted the larger exhaust tee. So rather than wait I bought last year.

This whole web site is all over Apeks as the leading reg by far, I've picked one up, held it, read the instruction manual and i'm not really impressed. Seems kinda run of the mill. I have no experience with the Apeks line because as I mentioned in one of my posts I have had a hard time in Cincy, Ohio finding one!

Cincinnati Diving Center 513/521-3483 has ATX 200 in stock
