In addition to Phil's update, it could also be a slight defect on the mating surface of the hard seat (orifice, crown...what ever the nomenclature for your regulator is.)

there was a recall recently of the xtx second stages, did you have it looked at in the past few months, because apeks decided to accidentally leave a part out that keeps it from free-flowing. just my small input :) good luck!

That could very well be the o-ring on the shuttle valve. It could also be a very well worn second stage soft seat. Sometimes is settles well in the worn "groove". Other times is doesn't quite seat. I will be interested in hearing what you find.

Rick,

I am also interested in the fix you found.

That doesn't even make sense. The part that was left out of some second stages was the diaphragm cover. You don't seriously think removing the diaphragm cover is going to keep a second stage from freeflowing, do you? :shakehead:

Not looking to hijack this thread, but while were talking about free flowing Apexs reg I had one this weekend. I dive the XTX200 and I put a 7' hose and took it out. I loved the feel of the Mi-flex hose but I did have a slight free-flow at the end of the dive when the tank pressure was around 700psi. Switched back to the stock hose on the boat and had no free flow with the same tank @ around 600psi or the next dive start to finish. Suggestions....... Thanks, Scott

It will if the lever's too high. (He was not talking about free-flowing just bubblin' right?)

sure it will, in highflow the water blasting in your face can (I wont say easily...) deflect the soft rubber diaphram. So to prevent this the mfg put in the cool chrome (or black) plastic cover that deflects direct water current.

....from what I gather, you're always supposed to tie MIFLEX hoses into a knot before actually diving them...maybe that's the problem ? :D

The Apeks part number for this o-ring is AP2041. If you are looking for a generic "dash size", I think it is an E70 AS568-002 (this is going from memory....don't hold my feet to the fire on the size).

I just ordered my full spare O ring store, and I can say pretty definitively (Unless McMaster-Carr has badly mislabeled their Orings) that it is not an -002, but the odd size -001 1/2.

Buna-N ------- Shore A: 70 ------ $2.82 per Pack of 100
Viton ------Shore A: 75 ------ $8.80 per Pack of 100
Silicone ------Shore A: 70 ------ $7.50 per Pack of 100
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene) Shore A: 70 ------ $10.00 per Pack of 25

I just got 100 of these in Buna-N. If anyone wants to spec it out for their own uses, just PM me an address and I'll put some in an envelope for you to see if they match like the SP balancing O ring or whatever.

Hello Crab bait,

First off, I will assume you really mean, "free flow" and not a "leak". A free flow is gas coming out the mouthpiece where it should, when it shouldn't. A leak is gas coming from a place when and/or where is shouldn't. Clear as mud? Good...read on.

Changing hose lengths or types should not make a difference to your second stage. The second stage does not "know" the hose length attached to it. In fact, if there was a problem with one of the hoses you tried it would have to be the one that did not cause the slight free flow. Sounds strange, but if for some reason the intermediate pressure was being affected by the hose (less pressure in this case) it would most likely be due to an obstruction or a leak in the hose.

So where do we go from here? Well most likely your problem happened when the new hose was installed on your second stage. Perhaps there is a jam nut on the inlet of the air barrel that is loose or something similar. Time for an inspection. As luck would have it, the Usual Suspects have just today made a post with quite a few helpful "how to" tips. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/regulators/260452-regulator-checklist-inspection.html so go there first and see if you can sort out the problem. If no help, better take it in to a trusted tech.

Let us know the results,
