My wife and I are heading to Bonaire in July. I've been looking at the travel trip insurance that helps you recover some or most of the cost of a trip in the event there's a sickness of death in the family. It seems to me DAN has the best coverage, on paper that is, of most I have been researching.

I've read DocVikingo's posts about insurance but it's more of a generic answer than being related to the question of Trip Insurance and I just didn't get a lot out of it, myself.

I already am a member of DAN and have the Preferred Coverage insurance which covers accidents during a dive, but not trip coverage.

According to DAN, the trip insurance covers costs of a vacation if you are unable to go because of sickness or death in the immediately family. The "immediate family" includes just about everyone except aunts/uncles/cousins and beyond.

Has anyone ever filed a claim with DAN trip insurance? If so, how were they to deal with?

Thanks. Randall

Hi Randall,
I looked at the Dan insurance and decided to go with diveassure. Now I like Dan's involvement with scuba health and education but diveassure appears to me to have better coverage for the price. Also, no seperate membership fee, but I admit I wish I received the Dan newsletter.

Actually, it seems from the website of Dive Assure you are refering to dive accident insurance. Dive trip insurance is different and helps one recover the expense of a dive vacation.....airfare, hotel, dive bookings and related non-refundable expenses in case of a death or sickness that prevents you from going on your trip at all. This is the coverage I am interested in since my mother is sometimes ill and lives with me. If her condition was to deteriorate, I would not be able to go, but must pay in full 90 days in advance for the Bonaire trip. Most, if not all, expenses on dive vacations are non-refundable without some type of Trip Insurance coverage.

I personally feel DAN is an excellent organization. DAN has the best dive accident insurance on the market IMO and I will continue to support DAN as a member because of their dedication to the sport of diving and research into dive safety. I have the preferred plan and feel supporting DAN is the right thing to do as a diver. :) Plus you get a neat magazine too!

Thanks

Randall

I just looked at the DAN insurance and the preferred insurance (was that the most expensive?) had trip insurance included. Read the info on the website, you shouldn't need additional insurance.
