Can some of the folks that fancy themselves DIR and use a weezle (at least seasonally) chime in here with their success or lack thereof? My wife has bouyant feet (partly due to "med" jets not weighing much) and has a cave cut suit to limit the gas down there. But she's freezing in 200gm thinsulate (+vest). And the DUI 400gm is fairly bulky in the legs and we doubt it will fit under her TLS350 either. Yes she's already using argon.

So one thought of mine was maybe the weezle. But I don't know how the bubble may or may not muck with her trim. Do they really require that much suit gas? How about on a scooter, does the upper torso smush out and get you cold?

Any other comments and success/failure stories?

Mods please move if this is too "non-DIR" of a quest.

I used to use a Weezle. It was rubbish. It was very warm on the surface, but when it is squeezed it doesn't really give that much warmth. They are also pretty rubbish when you flood them (they work well with a small amount of water, but don't handle complete floods well). If you are worried about warmth, then weezle is not the way forward. 400gr is the best option, either made to measure DUI, or maybe a santi. You could also give an additional layer over the torso (Santi do a 200gr vest for this purpose)

I am not DIR. However, I use the Weezel and I think it is outstanding. I have an extreme plus for my extended decompression stays. If you look at the material in the Weezel you can examine its insulating qualities when wet. It has characteristics similar to other synthetics. I would most accurately compare it to advanced sleeping bag technology. If I am on extended deco, for whatever reason with helium in the suit, I simply loft up and I am ttttoooaassstttyyy. You can take a weasel and stuff it into a tiny little sack. So, given its compressibility it can be squeezed down quite a bit. Not allowing it to have enough loft to do an excellent job insulating. However, I'd rather have it on deco than ANYTHING else. As I can put a slight Michelin man on and warm up.

She's only a recreational diver so warmth during floods is not a deal-breaker. With min deco we'd just get out in 5-8 mins if she flooded. In 48F water that's not enough time to have critical hypothermia. I'm not dismissing the issue, its just not high on her list of must have features.

Do the made to measure DUI 400gms fit trimmer esp. in the legs? Mine is a giant bag. If a XS (for her) is patterned similarly to my small it won't work.

I will check on the Santi sizing, forgot about them.

You're diving in FL right? I'd prefer experience in something comparable to our 46 to 52F Puget Sound waters.

I use one in Lake Superior ice diving, I think it's great. My dry suit, however, is custom cut measured for me wearing the weezle, so there's room for the loft. If you compress the suit, it won't insulate nearly as well. However, if you let the thing have room, it's great.

I'm interested as well. When I talked to DUI about this topic last year, i was under the impression that the special production undergarment was essentially made with the same gumby fit that a stock size would have. So for $200 extra, I thought it meant that you would have the correct length for sleeves and correct length for legs. (Correct being a relative term given that we are talking about DUI).

Richard, the Santi undergarment is beautiful and very well made, but in our current financial climate, it's also prohibitively expensive. Doug and I looked into this about six months ago.

I looked at the White's undergarment today. It has a lot of the nice features of the Santi, in terms of having flexible inserts where you need the motion, and it has this lovely drop seat zipper, which would be almost enough to sell it to me without knowing how warm it is, just for the convenience. A2Z Scuba is getting in some in Mel's and my size in about 3 weeks. They're also going to put the new Fusion suit in rental. You might want to hold off on a purchase until Amy gets those in.

I dove a Weezle, and I couldn't cope with the air trapping. The instructor who owned it said she would have to stop, go vertical, and WAIT in order to vent adequately. But I know Doc Intrepid has one and loves his.

I can't fit a stock 400g under my CF200, so I asked DUI the same question and got the same answer as you. They can't (won't) modify the circumference of the arms and legs, only the length. That's not to say you couldn't have someone custom tailor it for you, but that's a lot of trouble to go through.
