We had Lobos reservations for today, and made the drive down "just in case". Rest assured, it was NOT diveable. We spent 45 minutes watching the ridiculous waves and swell action crashing over the tops of the big rocks outside of the cove and then went and had a delicious breakfast. :)

I'm not sure how it was at breakwater - nobody in our group was too keen on trying, since we assumed that even if the breakers weren't bad the visibility and surge would be.

P.S. - Even the road leading to the parking lot at the cove was getting wet. The water was well up into the parking lot (via the ramp) when a set came in, but we've seen that before. Seeing the water clear the rocks and get the access road wet was quite a sight to behold.

Here's part of Cricket's post (on ba_diving) from 8:42 this morning:

But, no fret, you're not missing anything. The swells are up and the ocean is
angry today. Even Breakwater is ugly.
So, those of you who decided to stay home, good choice. You're not missing
anything!!

Todays the day to stay tuned to the Mavericks contest!!

And here's a report on the boat diving, posted this afternoon:

All in all, I'm quite happy I decided to stay hme this weekend.

It's amazing how sometimes you never know if you can dive a certain day or not.

To be honest, this morning I wasn't too overly enthusiastic about diving, but everything was in place, buddies, equipment, boat, etc. So Todd and I show up at K dock and board the Escapade. We pass the Monterey Express on her way back around the point as they abandoned diving outside of the bay.

Our hopes go way up as the Escapade bravely motors out past Point Lobos to a dive site called K-1. The water is nice and blue, but soon realize that the dive is not the problem as we were set to go deep and maybe get under the swell. The problem was getting geared up, getting off the boat and getting back onto the boat, typically the most dangerous part of a dive. The Escapade was rocking and rolling big time and Capt Jim called it.

Oh well, it was worth the effort anyway. We got back to Outer-outer Pinnacles only to see it completely foamy so left that site for Mile Buoy which was a bit shallower than we wanted, but hey better than not diving. Not only that, but we could see clear aquarium blue waters beneath us.

We dropped down and man, was the water clear. I could see the other 2 teams way down below us. Crap where was my video camera. After dodging all the Sea Nettles descending, we got to the bottom only to have the viz close up to about 15 feet.

The water was pretty calm on the bottom, with only a very slight surge, and we easily swam about the pinnacle calling the dive at 35 minutes, shot our SMB before leaving the pinnacle. That's when the dive got really fun. Gradually doing our free ascent the viz opened up to about 70 feet in the shallower depths.

Deco was awesome, with beautiful viz and a sea of Sea Nettles that we would dodge and gently punch and poke to see how they would change direction. We didn't even get stung once.

We loved it so much that after our surface interval we all decided to do that dive again, sans the bottom time and spend the entire next dive in open water at 20 feet playing with the jellies with the Escapade following us on the surface.

What an awesome day of diving. These surfers at Mavericks don't know what they are missing...great environment, great buddies and a great boat!

Sounds like boat diving was better than shore. We made it out at Monterey BW both Sunday and Monday, amazing!

Sunday there was plenty of surge and vis was perhaps 8-10 ft. Entries/Exits were a bit tough in doubles. It pays to have a good buddy!

By Monday vis was worse, it was often hard to make out my partners face from 3' away, and pretty dark at 35 feet. But entries/Exits were more reasonable. Around 45 ft deep vis cleared up a bit and you could see the silhouette of your partner 10ft away. Swell was long and resembled more of a current than a surge. We surface kicked from BW ½ way to Metridium Fields, dropped down, hit the fields then kicked all the way back to the wall @ 12ft. Often hugging the bottom. It was a little bit of an adventure ;-). Water was 55F!

There were just a few divers out in the water on Sunday and a few more today. You didn’t miss much by staying dry unless you were desperate for BT or addicted to SCUBA :D!

But strangely, I really enjoyed the underwater blizzard!!

Any pics Kathy?

Also, how big is a sea nettle and are they dangerous?

Thanks for the reports. Glad to hear that people made it out this weekend.

Sorry, didn't take any pictures, but waves were rolling up to the stairs.

Feet touched down today, about chest deep I pulled fins off, then caught a big gentle wave in, when the water pulled back I was about mid thigh deep. Fun stuff!

What appears to be a routine set of waves can change very quickly. Something like 13 people were seriously injured with one guy breaking his leg and a gal broke her ankle. This happened on Sunday.
