Anyone ever dive Pohnpei??

My friend & surgeon told me I MUST dive Pohnpei. Can only find "general" info about the island. Can anyone out there help me on this?? I have been to most World Class dive sites in South Pacific...but not Pohnpei. Is it worth the effort to go there?

I have some friends from our island diving there this week. My last e-mail from them stated that they say more manta rays there than in Yap during mating season. I will get more info when they get back. I think there is only one dive shop there.

Hi,

We dove there many years ago. My feeling is that if you are heading that way, Palau or Truk are better, though different, venues for diving. That said, Pohnpei is a smaller, much more quiet place that has its own charms.

We were just there in April. Stayed at the Village and also dove with them. We did it as a stop over before heading to Chuuk. It gave a way to relax and get over any time changes.

We did 8 dives over 6 days, taking two to explore the island which is woth while. One day was spent at Ant Atoll which was really good. Two dives were at Manta Alley. The first time we saw one or two Mantas the next around 10 or so. Most of the dives are drift dives with descent vis. Although Manta Alley was not so great.

Overall it was a nice stop over. I probably would not make it a primary stop but in combination with Chuuk it was great.

As for dive ops. There are two on the Pohnpei. The other is run by a Japaneese guy Kenny. He was nice enough. We meet him because his boat was used by the Village for a couple of days we dove with them cause they had large group come in and needed an extra boat. That said, if the Village has a large group booked 12+ divers and you are not part of the group it might not be so fun. That was our experience. As they send everyone out in three boats to the same site rather than splitting folks up. It just got a little crowded for our tastes on some of the dives.
