I have lived in a very deer-intensive area (Mercer/Hunterdon County NJ, bordering on Bucks County Pa), for 11 years. The deer in Princeton take over at night when people go to bed. They lay all over lawns and in the middle of the road like dainty cows. In all this time, I have not hit one. Yet. I have had close calls, yes, and I just know there is a deer out there with my name on it.
As Murphy's law has it, I will probably hit one soon, as I pick up my brand new 2004 Subaru tonight.

Roasts, ribs, steaks, ground, thin sliced for steak sandwiches!! I too have had deers run into my car - literally stopped as a stop sign, the goofy thing bounded right into my front fender, slid down, lay there, got up & ran off. I don't think it was hurt.

Here in Missouri it happens at least once a night and many times over five a night.

I had the wonderful pleasure of encountering a large group of suicidal deer one night at eighty miles an hour. I missed the group and got out smarted by a solo about 150 yards up the road.

Dead center, Dang what a mess!!

In over 30 years of driving, this is the FIRST time that I've ever hit a deer. Living in Michigan, I usually see deer every day, and have always been fortunate(fast) and have missed them until now.

If you have been driving in Michigan for that long before hitting a deer you have been incredibly lucky IMO. In our neck of the woods we place dodgeball with whitetails every day. It gets worse this time of year with the rut, hunting season and the deer starting to yard up.

Its not a matter of if your ever going to hit a deer, its a matter of when. I've hit three while driving in my 25 year driving career, two more while riding with others and have had probably dozens of near misses. Nothing like driving around one of those suckers to get the adrenaline pumping.

As clever as whitetail can be in the woods, they sure get stupid around roads and highways.

Yeah, it's always exciting when you have a near-miss. You should try it on a motorcycle some time. Woo hoo, way to get the adrenaline pumping!

:D

But seriously, you would think that with all the deer being hit, some kind of "natural selection" would happen and they wouldn't stand on the road any more. I guess natural selection takes a really long time...

Oh yeah.
Especially on a nice winding county road.

"No they hit me." He said, "Sure they did." I told him, "Well, I sure wasn't drivin' sideways now was I." They were jumping a ditch the same time I passed I didn't even see them until it was over. I was hit in the passenger side and they nearly climbed the car. My son was in the passenger seat and it scared the dickens out of him. We were so glad they didn't break through the window and hurt him. R

:amazed:Passing the wrong spot at the wrong time, huh?

We seldom get them up here on the High Plains, so I have to remind myself to watch for thme when I'm in deer country. If you drive in Texas, be careful of cattle, too, as not only do they get out and on the road at times - they have the right away in all but a few counties that have cancelled Open Range. I really hate to come up on a black one at night, as you don't see anything until they hear you, look, and the eyes reflect.

Be careful...
