This whole discussion is so silly. Some are saying that diving 1.2 is fine because you will run out of gas before reaching NDL. The obvious conclusion from that is that there is no need to use a dive computer when using nitrox. LOL.

An intelligent risk/benefit analysis for nitrox for a recreational diver could be very simply made by posting a tabular comparison of the NDL for say air, 32%, 34% and 36% for various depths and the associated PP of O2. The reader would be able to see the numerical value of the extended NDL versus oxygen exposure. I'm not going to do it, but I'm sure some of you can easily do it.

Arguing that "nobody" on a single tank can go into deco with nitrox is stupid.

How bout if you use a steel 100 or even a 120? Or does no one do that either
Extremely rare in the recreational diving world.

Really?

I always dive 120s in Cozumel, as do many others. I dive LP 85s generally overfilled to the equivalent of a 95 or even 100 in Florida. Lots of other people I see on the boats are doing something similar.

Steel 100s are very common off the rec boats in SE Florida
But not on the boats in the Keys.

Last month in Anilao on EAN 32 with good gas consumption, my wife and I went into deco w/ single tank AL80's diving GF50/70, seventeen times out of 47 dives lasting 55-75 minutes with a usual max depth of 75-85 feet. Profile wasn't square, so avg depth was ~55ft. But we still hit deco before we ran out of gas, maybe 40-50 minutes into many dives.

Yes, if we'd dived GF 50/85 we'd never have gone into deco. But at 74 y/o, I've never been bent and never intend to be. And we still got over an hour dive time despite 2-10 min in deco at the end.

The point is, @johndiver999 is correct. It's quite common. Either you limit your duration to below NDL or you do your stops. But either would be foolish without a computer. But it should be obvious, being able to do deco make it more rewarding (e.g., longer, more fun).

As for ox tox, the O2 clock was never an issue despite 4 dives each day, but chronic O2 exposure issues were noticed on the return home. I had slightly blurred vision (corneal edema) and a dry cough (pulm ox effects) for about two weeks. With EAN we were exposed to PPO2 of 1.0-1.2 for much of our 52 total hours underwater. Much like a patient in the ICU on a ventilator requiring 100% oxygen due to an illness, we lightly toasted our lungs over the two week trip. All better two weeks later, though.

I got bent at least three times last year, doing multiple single tank, nitrox dives and I go up to 1.6 and follow a computer.

I hope that proves I'm "right" on this issue. LOL

Sounds like I'm making a joke, but two of them were skin bends that hurt for a few days and the other was more serious - significant back pain that developed within 5 minutes of surfacing.

I "treated" myself for the back hit by going back down to about 38 feet (where I got instant and complete pain relief) and then spent 20 -25 minutes coming up, all done on the remaining nitrox in my tank- this happened on the first (only) dive of the day.

That is actually kinda funny now that I think about it; not only did a single tank have enough gas to get me bent (after I did a safety stop no less) but I had enough left over in the same tank to do a redneck deco (IWR) treatment. I came up feeling fine and drove in to a beach picnic and then went snorkeling afterwards, however I was using a large steel tank - maybe a 120.

Yeah use a computer.
