I'm a Fish!
My CCR backup/OC main computer finally died this week, so I'm in the market for a new one. I've been following the rumors of a new Descent Mk2 coming maybe sometime soon, maybe not ever, but haven't really followed anything else. With DEMA cancelled, I assume there's less incentive to wait until fall for the big reveal of new equipment.

What other computers, specifically tech-capable computers, are known to have new models or upgrades coming out soon? Will there be a Teric 2? A Perdix 3? Some new showing from Divesoft or Ratio?

I'm not in a huge rush to get a replacement as moving later this summer and then a new job will probably take most of my time through fall, but just curious what's out there. Or do I just jump on the Descent Mk1 sale, or bide my time and look for an older Shearwater (Predator or Petrel 1) at a good price?

I think it will be interesting to see what manufacturers do in the next 6-8 months. People to not seem to be buying durable goods. Not wanting to turn the discussion political but my reading is that the stimulus did little economically. That is the money was used for living expenses not new goods. So unless a mfg. has already paid for the up front production costs I would guess they will keep the current production line going longer so to keep cash on hand. Take this with some salt water as I am not in the mfg. business in any shape or form.

Shearwater in many respects hold the mantle of 'best in class' so its up to them to keep innovating or someone else to leapfrog them. In the interim the Teric has really set the new standard so we will probably see more computers trying to mimic that level of functionality at lower price points. The other nice thing about Shearwater is they tend not to release a new model for the sake of it (i.e. its not simply a face-lift to get into peoples wallets). As a result Shearwater computers do hold their value well, which is another credit to the brand.

A big thing for me is how reliable and intuitive the supporting software is. My wife uses an Aqualung computer and its frustratingly slow to go through the process of downloading and analyzing dives. The Shearwater Cloud app is light years ahead.....in a nutshell don't just look at the computer specs look at the whole solution.

Have you taken a look at the Atmos Mission One computer? It's like $300 on sale and has custom gradient settings you can use to match a shearwater

Isn't it nitrox only? without trimix, it might be less usable as a ccr backup?

Edit: yes it is: scuba mode 21% ~ 40% (Single-gas)
It is a nice looking computer though, but not an alternative for a multigas trimix computer

Ah gotchya. I'm only an air/nitrox diver so it doesn't matter to me.

The new Shearwater is not a tech computer. The rumored Descent Mk2 is the only possibility I have heard about.

I have a Predator EXT (with Fischer cable for a rEvo) that I will be posting for sale as soon as I get around to taking pictures.

But, for my OC primary/CC backup, I have a Teric and love it. If the Descent Mk2 does get released, and IF it will work the Shearwater/PPS AI transmitters, then I might sell my backup Teric and buy the Descent Mk2. But, my OC primary/CC backup would still be a Teric. The Descent would be my OC backup. At least until I had enough time on the Descent to be confident in using it as my primary for OC.
