Bungee fin straps! They're cheap, easier to use than spring straps and can be replaced in a minute. They last hundreds of dives for less than a dollar.

I used to use a knot but have since found zip ties to be more secure.

Not sure bungee spring straps will ever find acceptance with the DIR crowd.
A chance of failure higher than 0, means you have to carry a spare.

They would have to try them first, but getting DIR divers to try something outside their training is not going to happen. They are willing to replace a computer or compass strap with a bungee. There is no logical reason not to do the same for fins.
Bungee straps are easier to don/doff than springs, last hundreds of dives, cost less than a dollar and can be replaced in less than a minute. They hold the fin securely but you can easily stick a finger between the cord and your boot to slide them off. There is no downside to bungee straps.

Seems to me like a bungee made up of a boatload of rubber bands is going to be a lot more reliable than a spring made up of a single coiled up metal wire. Especially if exposed to water.

Do you just use the regular thick bungee people use for scuba stuff?

I do, for me most things need to be modified to fit, even the boots are modded by grinding the sole width

I use the original pulls by pulling a loop through and lock it with a wire tie

Or I use the fins with the best foot pocket available, at least for my feet, the GO Sport
