Catalina is terrific but for mainland shore, Shaws or Divers Cove in Laguna have some decent spots, pending conditions.

You may also try fisherman's cove in Laguna as long as there aren't fisherman! It is reasonably shallow but if there is a swell your it for a ride.
Little Corona is one of my favorites in O.C.
Honeymoon Cove, Christmas Tree Cove and Pt. Fermin in the Palos Verdes area.
Any spot in Malibu with kelp. La Jolla Cove and Hospital Point in La Jolla. There is also nice snorkelling all along ther Ventura and Santa Barbara coastline.
