A sewn webbing daisy chain although not "pull and it gets shorter" in it's simplicity would certainly allow you to immediatly adjust the "active" length of cord if you combine it with a stainless bolt clip or two for short clipping.

Just an idea...great now I've got all these different knot configurations going through my head...
