If you want to get really technical, bagpipes were invented to scare the living hell out of the opponents of Scotland in battle. Imagine hearing that sound coming out of the mist on a cold Scottish morning. Creepy! (It's also ironic that they're now held to be a beautiful instrument by most, including myself).
