Rob Stewart, the director, started out a general petition to save the sharks on its website. The movie opened in theaters in Canada this past weekend, and has had really great reviews!! They've collected over 16,000 signatures already.

In addition, the National Geographic Society has recently released a special report on the Global Fish crisis, with references to the collapse of the bluefin tuna stocks in the Mediterranean, shark finning, seabed trawling for shrimp and the positive impact that the creation of no-take marine reserves is having in New Zealand.

Here's the link to the report:

Sobering material, but it's great that the National Geographic Society is drawing global attention to the way we've over-exploited our oceans without regard for the ecological impacts for the last century.

Hopefully we'll realize what we are doing to our oceans on time.....

thanks for posting this...
I am actually doing a research paper on how much sharks are in trouble, its about my 4th project on this subject. I go to school in northeastern pennsylvania and my friends think im crazy for caring so much about sharks. it is so sad reading about what is happening to these beautiful creatures. i cry everytime i read about it....
