ROSS TOWNSHIP -- A day of diving on Gull Lake turned fatal for a Chicago man on Sunday afternoon.
Christopher Phillips, 58, drowned around 1:45 p.m. while on a diving trip at Ross Township Park with his brother from Kalamazoo, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department.
Phillips and his brother had completed their second dive of the day and were returning to shore, investigators reported. Phillips, who had been swimming ahead of his brother, was later seen floating in the swimming area.
Some on-lookers managed to get Phillips on shore, where they performed CPR. The Ross Township Fire/Rescue and Life Ambulance responded and continued CPR, but Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.
