nice, Walter ...

we do disagree on Abraham Lincoln ... his war powers paled in comparison to Woodwrow Wilson's

Also, Lincoln did free the overwhelming majority of slaves -- those in Confederate territory -- through his Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order he signed in 1863.

as the Union Army took and held southern territories, millions of slaves were freed under the Emancipation Proclamation

however, slaves in border states (mostly in Missouri and Kentucky) were not freed until the 13th Amendment was ratified by Congress in 1865, after Lincoln's death

17. Who is the Senate Majority Leader?

Harry Reid, D-Nev.

20. Who is the U.S. Attorney General?

Alberto Gonzales

21. What is the current Federal minimum wage?

$5.15

This quiz reminds me of an ungraded "diagnostic" quiz I gave on the first day of each course I taught on American Government at a number of colleges. I would use questions from the practice citizenship exam on the theory that it defined the minimum level of accpetable knowledge of American political culture (widely shared system of beliefs about the nature and role of government). Most of my students were native born U.S. citizens. A surprising number could not pass the quiz. Some of them were indignant when I suggested they might want to suspend their citizenship until the end of the class. Ironically, the highest score in one class came from a student from Sweden on a tennis scholarship.
