I've been reading alot about Belize & considering a Feb '06 trip. Sounds like San pedro is pretty cool & the food is good but my concern is the best dive sites seem to be 2 hours away (Half Moon Caye). I welcome all comments. I dove Belize last year off a cruise ship & I really liked it. Been to Curacao & loved the reefs & small marine life but looking for larger marine life.

I was in Ambergris about 5 years ago. There are good diving sites (relative term) very close. However, the best dive sites in Belize (e.g., Turneffe, Blue Hole, etc.) are an hour or so away. Ambergris does offer a good mix of diving and good food and a few activities.

Yes, I agree with Bill. I thought it was somewhat better-than-average Carribean diving, only rather deep. Not uncommon for the top of a wall to be at like 80 feet. Makes the dives a bit short but really nice anyway.

The diving on the outter atolls is mindblowing. Absolutely awesome.

The diving on Ambergris Caye is definitely very cool in its own right. The sites are mostly 5-15mins from shore, on a boat ride thats protected by the reef except for the final minutes before entry when you swing outside the reef. Lots of sites on the Caye and in many ways more practical than the the outter atolls.

If you can stay at the few sites on the outside, I probably would, but I wouldn't fret at all about Ambergris, although you should then take a one day trip to the Blue Hole and other key sites.
