Am I just crazy or do other people prefer to dive at home over travel...? ...

You may be asking the wrong group of people.

It's kind of like when I'm in the Over Eaters Anonymous forum and ask if I'm crazy for wanting to eat a whole loaf of bread.

Yeah. I know what you mean.

Just last month, there I was diving in clear warm still waters in Southern California and thinking about how much fun I have diving in our cold, low-viz, surgey waters in Northern California. :-)

All diving environments have there own unique aspects. I love diving the Caribbean but I would still miss Socal if I was there. I miss the Caribbean while I am here... There will never be kelp in the tropics, and there wont be tropical fish in CA, we just have to get over it and love it all!

Hey, I thought I was the only one too! Warm water diving is nice, Catalina was cool and I love the wrecks of the Great Lakes but home is the midwest quarries :D

Catalina is cool, you had better come back, ya hear?

Would love to! Hubby enjoyed it as well and mentioned staying longer. With the way the airlines are raising baggage fees we might have to mail our gear to Dr. Bill to be able to afford to go :D

I like it here, too. A few years ago I went to Thailand (Koh Tao) and did some diving, and I kept thinking it was so nice to be able to be in Cali, walk in off the beach, and swim right through kelp forests, and be right in the middle of everything, touching the rocks, etc. And I didn't see very many large creatures at all- just mostly little fish, practically minnows.

No huge bat rays, no big halibut, no seals or sea lions, no leopard sharks, etc- which is what always makes SoCal diving such a thrilling adventure for me. I feel lucky to have this kind of playground so close to home!
