I've never been asked to show the log either. Can't imagine any trouble with your DM card--maybe they might figure you've been inactive for years? I know PADI keeps all records and to get DM you need at least 60 logged dives. Maybe the shop you're dealing with can simply look you up on the computer (if same agency) and find some dates of some other stuff you've done.

I've been diving for 10 years with numerous Caribbean and Keys vacations and have never once been asked for a log book. I think the book is valuable to you but to no one else.

Never been asked for a log book even though I do sometimes take the precaution of printing a list of my last 50 or so dives before going on a dive trip to a new place (my log is 100% electronic and I have no signatures on anything).
However I would say that the fact that I take all my own equipment wherever I go probably weighs heavily in this.

What does it mean by "checking your dive log"?

How's the person who logs his or her dives on the home computer or even the laptop going to be able to show these dive charters the logs?

For those who log it manually (like I do), we may or may not bring the log books with us.

Besides how are these charters going to be able to figure out if the logged dives are real? I could fake my log and show 5000-dives and who's the wiser?

"be proof enough that I know the difference between a "filpper" and a mask?"

You got me! - is this a trick divemaster test question?
So what is the difference between a "filpper and a mask"?? :D

Also, does anyone know the difference between a "FIN" and a "FLIPPER" ??

In all the places I've gone, only one has actually asked to see my logbook, and that was in Australia, which has some more stringent rules about diving.

Only in Queensland! People hear that and assume it means everywhere. Australia is a big place and not everywhere is like Queensland :)

To the OP, I really doubt it will be a problem. The only time I had been asked for a log was when I did an aquarium dive and the guy seemed more curious about people's diving history rather than whether they had done enough dives. I only had 15 dives then anyway :) Sometimes places have asked me how many dives I've done, but never been asked for verification. I am quite sure your DM card will be good enough.

And that is why Fins are better.

[-]quick question, do you mean you have not done any diving in the last 5 years at all, or your dive log from 5 years till now is current but everything else is lost?[/-]

I see you are on you rcounty dive team, I would do as others have said and create a dive log going back the past few months, doesn;t have to be 100% accurate but if you fib and haven;t done any "advanced" diving in the last five years and do a dive to 130 feet and get hurt, well that would be a sad lesson to learn . . .
