I use a digital scale to weigh the bags. The penalty on American now for an overweight bag is a flat $100 smackers! Ouch!
 
Sorry to hear you lost your expensive gear when passing through my Island, but it can happend anywhere.
I lost my bag when I traveled to Haiti on '91, they just didn't unloaded it from the airplane. Since that experience, I allways insure my expensive equipment if not carry-on, you may consider this option in the future.

Back to the question at hand, I don't see nothing wrong with splitting the gear in diferent bags to meet the weight requirements and if posible carry-on your expensive gear.

One of our local airlines is now down to a maximum of 50lbs for both bags combined... fortunately they don't always enforce the weight limit (I even had my weightbelt with weights in the last trip...)

btw - if you like having a weighted plate you might consider two small pouches that you could attach to your cam bands (trim weights basically) and add your usual amount of weight to them.
