Alor Ideas

Hi all:

I have a week off in mid-October (10-17) and am kind of thinking about Alor. I know the time of year is good, but I don't think I can do/find a boat trip that will fit my dates and wallet.

There are a few land based options, but I am kind of thinking I should hold off until I can do it right on a liveaboard.

Any advice, ideas, and/or recommendations?

Depends on what you'd like to see :
Higher chances to get to see hammerheads, definitely Alor Eco divers.
More macro/muck dives in Kalabahi that would be La ptite Kepa or the newly open resort in Kalabahi bay.

I am not sure the liveaboards know the sites better (I would even say for sure the live aboards don't have the fine knowledge of the land resorts in Alor for the tides/spots matching, I've seen some of the famous liveaboards operating in Pantar/Alor mostly diving the "easy" sites).

The downside with the resorts is that they wont dive Bangeabang bay downsouth (muck dives).

I've dove with Thomas (Alor Dive I think it's called) in Kalabahi, Alor Eco, and La Petit Kepa, and I'm returning to LPK later this month. For muck diving, LPK is far and away the best choice...close to the sites and know them in and out. Diving muck sites with them compared to the other two is as "night and day" as I've experienced probably anywhere I've been. At least the last time I went, LPK alternates days muck and reef diving. Diving with Thomas allows you to stay in Kalabahi, that's about it...and it's not as if there's a great choice of places to stay there. Alor Eco has the nicest accommodation of the three, it's house reef is far nicer than LPK, and overall is a well run operation. It's also the most expensive option of the 3. Feel free to pm if you have some specific questions and I'd be happy to provide more detailed info. I'd agree with Luko that the infrequent LOBS that come through are going to be least likely to know the sites.
