Aloha Scubaboarders ... I just finished my open water PADI cert with Jack's Diving locker last week and now I'm hooked. I've already done a couple of shore dives with some buddies and it was great. On my last shore dive we saw a bunch of "crown-of-thorn" stars and my buddy had one curled up in his hands (with gloves on). He then made this gesture -> held his two index fingers pointing to eachother and moved them in and out (touching then moving apart).
I didn't remember this from the gestures we learned in class and I assumed it meant "Hey come touch this, it's very cool" :10:
so I bring my gloveless hands over to it and get pricked by just the slightest touch. Next thing I know, there's a stream of green blood coming out of my thumb and it took me a second to realize that this wasn't green poison, but instead the color Red can't be seen at fifty feet. To stop the bleeding, I placed my index finger on my thumb (not realizing I'm making the OK signal). So here I am showing my buddy that I'm bleeding and he looks at me and gives the "OK" signal back! It was hilarious after we surfaced and he realized my OK signal was really an "I'm trying to stop the bleeding" gesture.

Off to buy some gloves tomorrow :-)

Aloha,
Sam

El Orans:
Hello Sam,

welcome (Scub)aBoard! :happywave

Just a question: Why would you need gloves other than to keep your hands warm? :06:

Laurens
A lot of divers that I've observed here in Kona usually go out with gloves. Not necessarily for during the dive but I think a lot of it has to do with our lava rock shoreline. Shore dive entrances are not as easy as walking on a sandy beach so you wind up holding onto sharp lava rock on your way in and out.

Aloha,
Sam

Aloha E komo mai! The board and fascinating world down there. You’re right about the gloves the lava is vicious. Don’t feel bad about the unfortunate stabbing – I saw the same thing from a long time Kona diver a couple of weeks ago – very good you could laugh about it, I hear it hurts plenty.
A hui hou.

Thanks for the welcome :-)
Yes, it's amazing how much pain can come from the tiniest puncture!
It was very intersting to see the crown-of-thorn's underside though with all those little suction cup thingies. I need to get a photo of that some day.

Aloha,
Sam

Welcome! I also wear gloves because of the lava tubes, entry and exit over the lava. Not as easy to walk on as people may thing. Even at Shark's Cove you have to squeeze between some lava formations (or try to hop over a big rock) using your hands to pull you through. Oh, I also get cold pretty fast too.
